TRS2010

Having survived TRS2006, and its bagfull of underpeforrmance disappointments, I feel I may be ready to take the plunge once more into a newer version of Trainz. I have a quart bottle of asprin tucked away, and have successfully completed a seminar on Computer Anger Management. I have a brand new computer, fully capable of handling most anything thrown at it, and a book that tells me how to work it! I have most Trainz help sites safely stored away in Favorites (in BOLD type) and complete acssess to these forums. I feel I am quite ready to accept the new challange (if thre's anything I may have forgotten, please comment).
I am leaning toward TRS2010, but some Trainzers seem to prefer TRS2009! Or, should I wait for the next version? Or the next?
Your views?
Regards:)

Right. It's good to see you are fully prepared for the challenge. Somehow I picture you standing in the fuselage of a WWII troop carrier, tucking away your pre-jump checklist and steeling yourself for the adventure ahead.

2010 can be gotten for a reasonable price, around $20.00 - $25.00 with shipping from various sources, E Bay being one of them. I have both 2009 and 2010, and 2010 patched to the current build is superior to 2009. That's my opinion only, but I'll stick by it.

For comparison purposes 2006 was my previously favorite version.

I would agree with steamboateng except for Speedtreez. Even with a top of the line system it delivers such a performance hit and adds very little to the Trainz experience that it is not worth the hassle.

My opinion is that TRS2009 with all four updates provide a much smoother ride for the person who wants to enjoy Trainz and doesn't need the latest gimmickry.

Just my opinion, respectfully.

The Speedtrees issue raises a good point. I just don't use them myself, so I suppose if one could find a comparably priced 2009, then that would be an alternative.

Sorry to disagree but here but not all SpeedTrees give a performance hit, pick the right ones and there isn't a problem. I get far better FPS with replacing old trees with SpeedTrees, that's both on a low spec PC and a high spec one. SpeedTrees are rendered by the GPU unlike the rest of Trainz which is mostly CPU intensive. If you use Mcguirel's freeware Ultra Trees from the DLS there shouldn't be any performance hit.

Frame rate here with or without SpeedTrees is slightly better in 2010 than in 2009 SP4 and very much better than pre SP4 2009.

Anyone buying 2009 over 2010 IMO is wasting the opportunity to use the new features and routes, you don't have to use SpeedTrees it's not compulsory.

For me TS2009 patched to SP3 runs much smoother than TS2010 on a number of machines. My advice would be to use this and not patch it to SP4. SP4 cripples it so that it runs the same as TS2010.

Yes, Euphod, your comparison well describes my apprehension. Knowingly confronting the 'blue screen of.......', well, as a veteran of many Auran campaigns yourself, you understand! I fully expect some cunningly concealed (Auran concieved) digital code snippet sniping. Probably a dose of 'Error Message' diarrhea to go along with it. But I trust that my Trainzer buddies will help me thru the initial crisis.
Regards;)

I went from 06-10, not to painful. Here is your shopping list.
Asprin, you have.
Patience, you'll run low of.
Glasses, you'll start to squint wondering what CM is moaning about.
Beer, you'll want some to numb the pain because you forgot the glasses when you ran out of patience at the shop.
Patience, you've run out---
Glasses, you broke them when you had too much beer.

Enjoy.:hehe:

That is an excellent synopsis of my TRS2006 experience! Perhaps, maybe with the addition of more beer.
Which reminds me, I didn't add beer to my list! Must have been one of those Fruidian ommisions, 'cause I don't want you all coming over here and drinking it all on me! Or it may have been just one of those 'senior moments' which occur the more seniorer I get. (I find beer helps when that occurs. Don't ever remember having a 'senior moment' when there was plenty of beer or rum around.)
I will send the Chief Mate out immediately, despite the snow, to stock up. Thanks for the reminder.:hehe:

I seriously doubt whether there can be a definitive answer to the question of which version/build is better when a major variable is the computer it will be installed on. The many possible combinations of hardware and other software are enormous, each one favoring one or the other version.

I would be evaluating the features available and deciding which ones are must haves and which ones are nice to haves. Then if it works on your system, great, if not, revise your requirements or get a better system. :)

I see a version of TRS2010 on Amazon that includes 4 cd's with US routes. It goes for about 40 USD. Anyone have that version? Does it have lots of content? Is it worth it?
I can order that today and probably have it installed before the weekend.
Yes, I'm getting Trainz antzy, now.

I ordered TRS2010 EE Delux ed. today from Amazon for abot 42 usd. It includes 4 US routes on cd's.
