**SOLVED** TRS 2019 locking up in every module

Hi all - purchased 2019. I downloaded the full installer, it would not boot returning an error - Unable to access temp / temp-2 folder.

So, I downloaded the Online installer. Two hours later after what seemed like a thousand upgrades, I can boot TRS19 but if I do anything other than look at settings, like use content manager, asset downloading, it locks up my pc. Anyone else dealing with this?

Dell XPS 8700, Win 7 Pro, Core i7 / 4770 3.4 GHz- 16 gig ram, EVGA 1070Ti, two - 2 TB hard drives.

Maybe uninstall the whole pile and start over?

Thanks

Sounds like a corrupt file somewhere, mdvee, and your best course may indeed be to remove all of your previous attempts as fully as possible and then start again.
With your computer spec, you should have no problems running TRS19 with medium-to-high visual quality and performance settings.

Suggest that you move the entire installation to your fastest hard disk drive and away from the default suggested path by the programs installer (C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\N3V Games...)

Let's say you decide to install it on your D: drive instead, then before you run the installer from the downloaded executable, I'd suggest that you create two empty folders - one named 'TRS19' and then another one named 'Userdata' inside that (i.e. as a sub-directory) on D: drive so that both exist before you run the installer. That way you simply need to point the installer to the correct path (D:\TRS19 for the program files) and (D:\TRS19\Userdata) for the Local User Data files.
This makes your installation easier to maintain (and backup) since it is removed from the hidden AppData folder on C:.

When you start up for the first time, go straight to the Launcher's Install tab under Trainz Settings, to ensure that the path shown to your Local Data Folder is indeed set to D:\TRS19\Userdata.
Then visit the Internet tab to enter your Trainz UID credentials.

Thanks PC_Ace! I appreciate the file layout tips as well! Makes sense what you are suggesting. I also run redundant backups to a slave drive (sort of a RAID) setup.

Will be reinstalling once I clear out the original install and backup. Not real sure what went wrong but I’m sure TRS19 is a trainload of ones and zeroes... all it takes is one file to fail.

Well just an update, uninstalled, re-installed everything after a full defrag etc. This thing locks up more than any software I have. Not sure what the problem is, seems to be mostly when accessing content whether locally or on DLS. I have a second tier internet connection (100 mb) direct wired to my router so I doubt that is it.

Will keep trying things and updating.

Mike something ain't right here. Since you've got the program installed, this is now a local issue and not one related to the network.

There are a couple of things to look for.

1_ Have you tried disabling real-time scanning of your Trainz data folder?

That can really wreak havoc on performance since the data is decompressed before it's read, and antivirus programs salivate any time a file is decompressed from an archive. :)

2_ Is there anything on the screen about precaching or caching?

It could be now that the program is installed, it's busy updating the database. This can cause chunky actions until this has settled, down, but usually it's not too bad; just a busy circle cursor for a few minutes.

Most likely cause for a lock-up is a corrupted asset somewhere in your local data folders.
Suggest run a 'Faulty' assets filter in Content Manager if you can open that up with it freezing. Faulty assets will be shown in red.
Either Fix, Disable or Delete them as appropriate. Many may simply be missing dependencies, so once you have downloaded those, you'll be up and running again.
And as John mentioned, your memory resident antivirus software conducting file scans during gameplay can be a big performance inhibitor.
Suggest create an exception for your Trainz folders and executables.

I know you don't want to hear this, but you mentioned Windows 7. I am pretty sure if you were using Windows 10, you would have a very noticable difference in performance. I am using a 4790K CPU, not a heck of a lot higher than yours, and GTX 1080 GPU. Other thing I can suggest is install it on SSD type of drive.

Also check that no assertion message has popped up, it might be behind the game window as this will freeze the game until it is deleted.

Stagecoach - Good thinking!
Alt+Tab should quickly reveal any hidden assertion dialogs for the OP to review - and then dismiss - by clicking on the 'Continue...' button, allowing the program to proceed.
This assumes, of course, that the current version still sports assertion dialogs.
Windows 7 also has quite a few permission dialog pop-ups of its own which can also freeze current program activity.

Thanks everyone! Some great ideas here and all make sense. At work now but will look into this later. Yes, I have real time AVP running and was reading up on that in another thread.

Also have noted most of these “lock ups” are slow to come on, then the freeze. In other words she slows down to an eventual lock.

Will keep everyone updated to save someone else headaches once fixed!

Fixed!!! And a huge thank you to everyone that helped me out. My problem was indeed two-fold. After clearing faulty assets, my performance and load times sped up dramatically. As for the lock ups, I'm embarrassed to say that yes, my AVP (Malwarebytes) was the problem. And honestly I should have thought of that.

I am spoiled with my Flightsim and other games not battling with my AVP's, so I never even considered it. We know what happens when one assumes...

Again , thank you very much for the pointers and I hope anyone else that may struggle with these types of problems reads first!

Mike

That's great to hear.

Don't be embarrassed and chock it up as experience. We know about this because we went through exactly what you did already.

Yeah some programs handle data differently. With Trainz content being in compressed files, the Antivirus may scan the files, but never sees the inside until the files are decompressed on the fly and this causes the A/V program to go bonkers and start scanning every file as it's accessed. Since these files are images, and text files, there's little chance of them being infected anyway at least during runtime. This doesn't mean to exclude these files during a normal antivirus scan though and let the program scan these on a regular offline basis.
