TRS 2012: Boxed version VS. 'Steam' download version

Been considering getting TRS 2012 and have been debating whether to go with the Steam gaming service version or buy the boxed version. I know several people will have already tried the version from the Steam website; which is the better deal? I've heard about recent problems witht eh Steam version but since there are other games there that I would be interested in, which is the best? Boxed version or Steam download version?

Support N3V or Jointed Rail and buy a boxed Disc, and get it delivered in @13 days, or download direct from N3V ... absolutely I love N3V !

Getting something foriegn, shipped abroad, in the US Mail is so thrilling (and waiting, and badgering the Mail Person everyday: "Is IT here Yet") ?

The foriegn shipping charge is cheap, something like: "A buck, three eighty".

The Postal cardboard box, is a neat sentemental keepsake, with cool looking US Customs stampings & stickers (I framed mine, and hung it on my wall).

I wouldn't get the steam version if it was free. Download version from N3V is quick and easy and all updates are available.

Get the real deal from N3V, then you will have no problems with patching, if we get any more, or the other problems that have been reported, because whatever patches and add ons N3V does is for their product and may not be compatible with Steam. I ordered the anniversary package of TS12 when it was on sale and it got to me in a week or so. TS2010 and Murchison 2 got to me from Australia and New Zealand, respectively, within a similar time frame, so get the physical discs, survival during a week of waiting is possible. It's good to have the tangible product if problems arise requiring a reinstall. Please don't ask me how I know that :hehe:

I would strongly recommend getting it from N3V, for the following reasons:

1.It supports the Aerotrain addon, which is not currently available for the Steam version.
2.You are safe if Steam decide that they want to terminate your account - ask Hiballer if you want to know what I mean there.
3.It's easier to register your TS12 serial with the N3V direct (or any non-Steam version).

Bear in mind that there is both a boxed and a digital download version.

Thanks guys. It was only bc there were other games there that I considered it. @Bernie: I won't ask, don't worry. As soon as I have some extra cash I'll order the game from Auran. I had to fall back on my copy of old TRS 2006...................................................................................................................................*insert choice phrase here about how old, obsolete, and annoying it is* I'd rather have TRS 2012 anyway.

I'm guessing they just decided to terminate his account without warning. The Aerotrain was always a unique little streamliner, I had hoped to get that. Um the digital downloads I don't mess with after that first one that gave me a huge headache just to try and get the darn thing installed.

You are correct regarding the account termination - one reason why I don't like what Steam/Valve does.

If you don't mind waiting, a boxed version is a good idea, as you have a disc you can use to reinstall if needed.

I don't mind waiting at all. After all, N3V has a sale this month and the boxed version was shown with reduced price.

I always get digital downloads of programs, and just save the downloaded files, so if a reinstall is necessary, I just reinstall from the saved files. Doesn't that work with Trainz too?

Reasons to get it from N3V Games direct only as everyone else outlined above. My main reason to get any Trainz product DIRECT from N3V Games is, that there is NO middle man, hence ALL profits go directly to N3V Games. Therefore getting the next Trainz version done more quickly and also helping and insuring in getting upgrades/updates made for the N3V Games Trainz versions first.

I have done so with ALL my bought Trainz product except the first Trainz (UTC), which I found in a bargain bin of a games shop and which did start me of an almost 10 years involvement/enjoyment with Trainz. You can never imagine how much joy, fun, creative urge/hunger and all around satisfaction Trainz has given me for those past almost 10 years of my life.

Thank you AURAN/N3Vrfail/N3V Games :Y:.

Yes, that's what I did. Just make sure to DL the files to their own folder, and all in the same folder, and you're good to go. You can reinstall as often as you like without having to wait, and wait, to download all over again.

Get it from N3V wether boxed or digital. I prefer boxed as t is a substantial download. It is always there if you need to re-install, or if you want to have more than one install in the future.

And if you really want a hard copy, burn a DVD with the files on it, or you could store it in the cloud.

I purchased the Steam version on November 25. It appears to be the latest version that everyone else has. There was another thread on this forum around October that verified this. Once installed you can back up the entire TS2012 folder to another drive or DVD. You also don't need to run Steam to run Trainz. You can copy the folder anywhere on your system and run tranz.exe from the new location.
I use the steam installation as a backup and run from a copy in another location. I was able to update all assets exept for two. There are some bugs but nothing that any other TS12 versions dont't have.

Edit: 5/20/2014. Since SP1, you must now be running Steam in order for trainz to work. Also, I am no longer able to run a copy of Trainz in another folder. For instance, to test running Trainz on a flash drive or SSD. I still like Steam for many games, but I have now come to the conclusion that if you want the best with Trainz, you need to buy it directly from N3V. I will no longer recommend to anyone that they purchase Trainz on Steam.

This, all around. I'll take it a step further - Steam could pay me and I still wouldn't want their malware on my machine.

I did that with my downloads along with any serial number/cd-key needed. If I need to install, I open the CD-Key.txt file I created, copy the number, and then paste it in the box when asked. This saves me trying to type out the numbers and letters, and trying to figure out if something is a 0 (zero) or O.
