Trivia question about World Origin

This evening I was setting up the World Origin for a route I am building in TS2010 in California and noticed when I clicked the edit button the dialog box had the following coordinates already entered: 38 degrees 53.400 minutes north by 77 degrees 1.200 minute West.

I got curious about it, especially since I couldn't believe this could be accidental, so I tracked it down on Google Earth to a spot on the National Mall in Washington, DC, sandwiched between the National Gallery and the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. Looks like a great place for a picnic.

This had to be by design. Does anyone know why or how this spot was chosen?

It's the capital of the United States; it really makes more sense than any other default value. It's determined by the "Region" setting when you first start a new route.

Thank you, RRSignal, your answer makes perfect sense. But the theory proposed by Euphod and supported by Stationbeem's "evidence" is much more romantic. I prefer to believe it on that ground. :hehe:

On a more Trainz-type note, the world origin is usually one of the corners (I cannot remember which) of the first baseboard (the one automatically created when the map is created)

It is a strange coincidence though.
