Hello Lynn

 You need to use the Help file for TransDEM. Read all the pages, refer to the glossary, go to the links to the web as provided.

Find the source for you geodata, where you will find the source for the elevation map.

Try to obtain the smallest resolution you can, such as 1-arc/second, or whatever is available.

Then comes the raster overlays, or the map to cover the terrain.

Practice using TransDEM with the tutorials provided.

I printed the Help files into double-sided pages & put them into a binder for offline study. A second monitor would be most helpful...

Not sure of your issues, but read the manual TransDEM for Trainz, it is in the manual folder.

Download DEM from somewhere, unzip and place it anywhere you want

Import into TransDEM and you need to convert it - it will do this automatically for you. Also, convert to UTM projection (see manual)
Once converted, save it. Do the same for any other DEM that you want to join together with the first.

Once converted, you can open the first DEM, and any other and TransDEM will create a single DEM for you.

You can also create georeferenced images and draw your route on them and use a mask to select the area to export. THe manual takes you through all these steps and it is actually very easy.
