Transfering content from Trainz 10 into 12?

Hello all,

I will be picking up a new PC on Tuesday, and was wondering about my Trainz situation. I currently have Trainz 10 installed on a Vista machine, though I was considering upgrading to Trainz 12 with the new system. Would it be possible for me to transfer my content, I.E. routes, locomotives, etc, into a fresh install of Trainz 12 on a Win 7 system? I recall hearing of ways to mass-transfer content into a new Trainz install... but is there a way to do this between the 10 and 12 versions? Or would I be better off just installing 10 on the new computer?

This is very doable and very easy actually.

There are two ways to go about this...

1) You can copy the whole TS2010 install to your new system and keep it intact. Just make sure you install it in a place other than C:\Program Files (x86)\... etc. and into a place like C:\TS2010. This will ensure there are no permission problems with writing to the files.

The install is now done and the only thing you'll need to do is tell Windows and IE what to do with CDP files which is pretty easy, and we can help you when you get there. You will also have to run the program as administrator, which is the right thing to do with modern operating systems.

or upgrade to TS12 and bring your TS2010 stuff along...

2) Install TS12 and update to the current build.

You can add in your serial number for your TS2010 install into your TS12 install after you've copied over your .JA files from TS2010. We can help you here.
Once that's done, import, note the word import, using Content Manager in TS12, the files from your TS2010 install. Depending upon how much stuff you have, it can take a long time. Now run an EDR, which can take a long time, and you'll have all your stuff from TS2010 installed with TS12.

It's sounds worse than it really is to do. I've done this more than a few times going from TS2004 to TS2006, then from TS006 to TS009, TS009 to TS2010 and finally from TS2010 to TS12.

Hi Jonathan,

I'm not so sure about this. I have copied my install of TSxxxx, now TS12 from Windows 7 to Windows 8, and now to Windows 8.1 Update 1 all without issues. You just need to make sure the program is run as administrator as anything located in the SysWOW64 folder should be put there by the OS. That is, unless I'm missing something that I'm not aware of.

That may have been the file that was required, it was a long time ago since I did this, all I can remember is that on start-up it said the something or other file was missing in the SysWOW64 folder, so I looked through the TS10 installation disk and found it on there, so I copied and pasted it to my SysWOW64 folder, and it worked correctly from then on.

I got my new system the other day, and have a few more questions. I decided to go with an upgrade to Trainz 12. It should be coming in the mail today. The way my system is configured, Drive C is a 232 GB solid state hard drive (SSD). Drive D is a 1TB conventional HD. Obviously, since Drive D has more capacity, my first inclination is to install Trainz on it... would this make a difference? I've heard SSD's have better performance, but would programs have to be installed directly ON them, if that makes sense?

Also, what files would I need to copy from my 2010 install? I think I've heard it's essentially the "Local" folder, but I'm not positive. Any routes that I am working on in surveyor, would I have to save as .CDP's to get them to show up?

Hey man,

If you're like most of us you'll find that your Trainz installation can get real big real quickly. When that happens on your SSD it's going to be a pain to move it to another drive. What I suggest is the main install on the 1TB hard drive and a "running" install on the solid state drive (call it TS12B, for example). This way you can download all the content you want and build your routes etc complemented by a slim install for running completed routes.

Oh it's basically installing TS12 a second time in another directory (in your case the SSD), the purpose of which is to have maximum performance, both by virtue of the SSD and not being bogged down by hundreds of gigabytes of additional content not required to run a route. You can have multiple installs of Trainz on your computer and even have them running concurrently with no problem.

You mean with no technical problem. This advice is contrary to the license for TS12.

4.1 Subject to the terms and conditions of this License, N3V grants to you a personal, non-transferable and non-exclusive license to

(a) install and use the Software, at any one time, on a single stand alone computer in accordance with normal operating procedures as notified by N3V from time to time; and

(b) either

(i) make one copy of the Software that is in electronic form solely for back-up or archival purposes in support of your permitted use of the Software; or

(ii) transfer the Software that is in electronic form to a single hard disk, provided you keep the original solely for back-up or archival purposes.

You can only install once on a specific pc per (a) above.
