TransDEM ?

I'm having a minor problem importing TransDEM into '12. What's happening is the tiles in the UTM layer are offset in elevation, above the baseboard; each tile is at a different elevation. What am I doing wrong?
(transdem forum won't let me log on)

That's pretty normal and is no great cause for alarm. Use the Object 'adjust height' tool and click on the offending UTM tile(s); note that you may have to actually 'drag to adjust' the height slightly. The tile(s) should immediately pop into the correct position.

However, IMHO UTM tiles are of very limited use in TS12 due to what I consider to be a TS12 bug (I hear that they work well in TS2010). Namely, the wireframe becomes very thick when UTM tiles are present, and as a result it is difficult if not impossible to see through (in order to view the tiles). Having said that, I still wish you good luck with your project.

Thanks, that's good to know. do I want to adjust it so that it's below the level of the ground? Do I even need that layer if I'm using Google Earth maps?

TransDEM gives you the option of placing them slightly below ground level when they are generated and that is what I would recommend. In reality, though, you will probably need to set them to different heights based on the elevations on your map - as close to the surface as you can, but not so close that they prevent you from placing objects or splines.

You need the UTM layer if you want to use highly-detailed images, because ground textures have very poor resolution (1 pixel per 10 or 5 meters).

I'm afraid I can't offer much more advice than that, as I have given up on using UTM tiles in TS12 and have been developing my own solution for Google Earth images, that makes use of other tools & options that are available in TransDEM.

I haven't seen that yet, albeit I haven't been building routes as much as I should be.

I found that you're talking about UTM tiles of satellite imagery it's hard to see regardless of version, I usually use UTM tiles for Google maps because Google maps generally has the track layout really clearly and I have no problem seeing in either version in wireframe mode.
