Okay so, I just came on here to see if anyone could help with just a few tiny things (mainly converting file type)...and then I saw the thread that captainkman started about him getting sick of newbies asking for help who can't be bothered trying it out first, and now I'm a little worried in case I annoy anyone :(

I'll post my point, but I understand if anyone does tell me to go away and try it myself.

Basically, I'm just inquiring as to whether I have to ask permission from the creator of a train/tram/anything, such as the GT6 A/B, to edit the textures? I'm not planning on uploading them anywhere, they'd just be for my personal use, so should I still ask permission? (I have no idea who created the GT6 tram)

Also, I've found how to convert a .texture file into the image editing software required (the one I have downloaded is GIMP 2) but after several google searches and faffing around with the files, I haven't had any success after trying for the last few hours.

Basically, I feel really bad for asking after seeing that thread but I have been trying to do my own research and come up with nothing :( any help would be greatly appreciated
 
If it's for personal use only, you do not normally need the permission from the creator unless the config.txt specifically states that permission must be sought for any changes.

When dealing with .texture files, you need to convert it to TGA first. PEV has a tool for this called Images2TGA, which is available from my tutorial website - see the thread in my signature for a link to the PEVSoft tools page. You may also want to download the tutorial whilst you are at it.

Another thing to watch out for is when saving it, make sure that RLE compression is not ticked, as it is ticked by default which causes problems in Trainz.

I went on your site earlier whilst researching how to do it and downloaded that :) the two texture files I'm currently editing are saved in TGA format, however it's the converting back to .texture that doesn't seem to be playing ball. I'll have a good read of the tutorial, thank you very much :)
 
Okay, I've edited the texture in GIMP and saved and it has saved it as an .xcf file. What process do I have to follow to convert .xcf into TGA format?
 
Sounds like you've used the wrong option. Re-open that .xcf file, then use the Export option in the File menu to save as TGA, making sure that the RLE compression box is unticked.

It is advisable, although make sure the TGA file is saved correctly first, and that it's the .texture you're removing, not the .texture.txt file.

Okay, I've done that and the tram is just all white :o it doesn't matter, it may just be the curse of Trainz Classics striking again! Thank you for helping anyway :)
 
If it's all white, then something has not saved properly. Did you verify that the file mentioned as the alpha file existed?

Here's what I did: I opened the texture with the Images2TGA software, converted to TGA, opened with GIMP 2, edited the texture, saved it, exported it as "a_wagen_orange.texture" and selected the (*.tga) from the drop down menu of available formats, to the folder that I opened it from (gt6_bs_body) so it was the only file in that folder with TGA as its extension (the rest either being called TEXTURE File or IM File). I also turned off RLE Compression. I then commited it and loaded it in Trainz and it was white. Gah, Trainz!
 
Ah - I think I can see what's happened. If the .tga has got .texture as part of the filename, this part of the filename should be removed - check the matching .texture.txt file for what the correct name should be.

I can't find a texture.txt file (probably because the whole folder is in German) but when I try to export the image from GIMP 2 with just the name "a_wagen_orange.texture" it says the given filename does not have any known extension. I think I should point out that the texture I have edited is the only file in the folder with what looks like the little quicktime logo next to it. Should I just try with a different editing software or will I run into the same problems again?
 
There should not be an issue with the editing program. Try exporting the image as a_wagen_orange.tga and see if that corrects the issue.

Nope, still nothing :( I'm following your instructions to the letter but this just isn't happening. I could try sending you the images? :) I don't see why it isn't working because I am following every instruction
 
I have had a look using the image files you sent me and it is working properly on my version. This means that you either saved the file under the wrong name (i.e. including the .texture part in the filename) or you didn't turn off the RLE compression when exporting.

Thanks very much :) I made sure I turned the RLE compression off, so the only other thing can be the filename, however when I go to commit the texture, it says it has worked fine. Is there any chance you could send me the texture file that you got working just so I can see my mistake and correct it? :)
