Trainzoptions & Memory Upgrade

I just upgraded my memory from 1.5Gb to 3Gb. I had ResourceMemory set 512K. Should I up it? Or leave it alone? What does ResourceMemory do anyway?

It says in the Manual you should set Resource Memory at half your available RAM - in your case 1500 Mb.

My advice is to experiment with different values.

The effect of this figure on performance isn't predictable. While most people report finding that a higher figure gives better performance, I've found that on some computers a lower figure gives better performance.

I have a theory that there are various caching mechanisms (the hard disk electronics, Windows, and Trainz) and which is best at doing the job depends on the hardware and maybe the Windows virtual memory configuration settings. But I'm only guessing and not claiming to be anything other than an interested user on this subject.

I agree with John259 that you should experiment. However, I also have 3GB of RAM and I find that everything runs smoothly if I give trainz the maximum amount a 32-but OS can use, i.e. 2GB.
Line for trainzoptions.txt:
-resourcememory=2048

As a matter of interest theres an item in Control Panel called "Page File Size" which it says is Hard Drive Memory which can be used as RAM.It says my PC can use 3100 - 5000 Mb but I can set it to use 5000 Mb if I want.My PC has a RAID Hard Drive (320 Gb + 300 Gb set to RAID 0) so would it be worth setting this to the higher value?

I wouldn't set the page file any larger. The disk-drive size is different than the memory for your computer. The page file acts as extra space when the RAM (chip memory) runs out of space.

You did however do yourself a favor by setting the pagefile to the max. This will prevent the file from becoming fragmented, which can put a drag on performance as programs swap out from memory to disk.

In the old days, the pagefile-size rule used to be 1-1/2 times the size of the total system RAM (memory not hard drive space). This works pretty well most of the time. Usually anything less and the system will starve for performance and bring up error messages. Anything more than is necessary and this will waste disk space and the system will lose performance.

I'll experiment with that and let everyone know the results. I appreciate all responses. Thanks everyone.

I would also recommend making sure that you set the min and max vales for the page file to the same value. This will stop windows from resizing it, which slows down the computer considerably. Also, if possible, move the page file to a separate hard drive (not partition) from both trainz and windows.

Well.... last night as an experiment last night I set the page file size, and restarted my PC.I couldn't see any difference after TC3 opened but it cured one problem.I have TC3 and an Atari emulator for the 1980 VG "Battlezone" and in both cases when I tried to open them I would be faced by a black screen, and when I tried to close it I would get "This program is not responding".When I opened them again a few seconds later they would open normally. After setting the Page File Size I found that TC3 opened normally the FIRST time, and its the same for Battlezone. So, a result all round.:D

Hi Ess1 , what I did on my PC was to open Control Panel then click System>Advanced>Performance>Settings>Performance Options>Advanced>Virtual Memory then I selected the circle beside "System Managed Size" then "set" and OK after which I was told to restart my PC. NOTE - although it worked for me I don't know how or why it worked so think long and hard before you do it, as I wouldn't want to feel responsible for any problems if it didn't work for you.

Hi lewisner, Thanks for info. Here is a screenshot of mine using XP-3 with 2m

eg RAM.

Hi ess1, if you select "system managed size" your PC takes care of it itself. However after first replying to you I tried setting it to "Custom" then filled in "Minimum - 5000Mb" and "Maximum - 5000Mb" so in your case you would set it to "Min - 4092 Max - 4092".On restarting my PC I appear to get faster loading times.I have a Class 50 + 8 consist at Carlisle and it used to take ages to load. Also it seems ( but I may be imagining it) that the sound is improved. Its definitely worth trying.
