I have Trainz 2012 installed, and i am trying to use the download station to download content, however, my browser does not recognize the Trains://install

What program do i need to download and where to get that file type to recognize trainz to download that content

Welcome to the forums.

If you are using Windows Vista or later, you must run Content Manager at least once as administrator in order to set this up, or use my Trainz Protocol Changer tool - available using the Utilities link in my signature.
