Trainz will neither launch nor uninstall

I have an unusual problem. Quite suddenly yesterday Trainz refused to launch. Having clicked Start, the familiar screen with the cogwheel came up, the cogwheel did a half turn, stopped and there it sat for ever.

Thinking I may have accidentally fallen foul of the closing the computer too soon issue, although I had been very careful and gave it well over 10 minutes on the previous occasion, I then set about the laborious task of reinstalling. I got a shock when it refused to uninstall as well. Having got into the Uninstall screen, I was told to wait a moment - and 20 minutes later I gave up.

Any ideas gratefully received.

I'm assuming this is TRS'06?

Have you rebooted your computer at all during this process?

*I cannot stress enough* That we need more info to help this. What I've asked is a start. However, it sounds like your TAD has hung up. You can Force Quit it or reboot the computer and that will un-hang it, but the cause of the hang will likely still exist. If you're lucky, all you'll have to do is Force Quit TADaemon and then sit through the resultant Database Repair (Start it up, go make a sandwich, watch a movie while you eat, take a nap, and after all that will probably be done). But depending on what other information comes up, it could be a few other issues as well.

Good Luck,
Falcus

Hi Falcus

Thanks for the quick reply. Yes, it is TRS 06. I've done several reboots - in fact the only way out of the frozen launch screen was to commit the cardinal sin of switching the computer off at the box. If your theory is right (and I hope it is), how do I force quit TADaemon please? Sorry to be so ignorant - I love my Trainz but don't know the technical bits!!! It's a couple of years since I last had a hangup but then an uninstall and reinstall was tedious but straightforward.

Well, rebooting would Kill TADaemon. Try soft Rebooting one more time, then bring up CM (NOT the game itself, open the Launch Menu, and go to CM). That should start up an automatic Database Rebuild. If it does Hang up again, or the Database Rebuild freezes, you might have bigger issues...

What's your computer's stats like? Do you know how big your Trainz Install is (# of Assets, not MB/GB)?

Hi Alan,

The problem is very simple. Since you haven't removed TRS2006 yet, try this first...

Open up Windows Explorer

Press F3 and search for assets.tdx

When the file is found, delete it.

Close the window and reboot your PC.

Restart TRS2006 and it will rebuild your database. It may take some time doing this, but it will rebuild it and you should be able to run TRS2006.

+++++++

In the event you need to reinstall...

Back up your data first. I can't remember the folder where the data is, I think it's called Local, but I'm not sure - it's been quite some time since I used TRS2006!

The uninstaller is broken. It happens when you install the SP1. It's not N3V (Auran)'s fault and is due to the installer program...

Anyway, just delete the folder and then run a disk clean up utility such as CC-Clean. Once that is done, reinstall.

Remember when reinstalling, if you don't have the SP1 as part of your original install, you need to put it in separately. DO NOT RUN TRS2006 PRIOR to PUTTING IN THE SP1 !!!! . If you do that, you'll have to start over as it hoses something and the patch won't work, and neither will your TRS2006 install then. So put in the program, reboot, put in the SP1, and reboot once it's installed. With the backup made, you can then import your user content back in again using Content Manager Plus.

Many thanks. I'm just off to work now but will have a go when I get home. Yes, I found the local file yesterday and have copied and saved it to a safe place - just in case. The thing that has thrown me this time is when it wouldn't uninstall. I have everything backed up and, although it has been a long time ago, a previous hiccup was easily solved (with John's help incidentally) by a combination of uninstall/reinstall and letting the database rebuild.

I'll let you know how I get along.

Hello again
John's Option 1 worked and I'm back in business. So many thanks and thanks also to Falcus for the initial comments. I must write it down in my notebook so I don't need to ask again next time!
