Trainz Tutorial: Trackside Hill Creation With Splines (LARGE Images)

Ramblin' Man..
Hello All,
I wanted to share a way of which I do "landscaping" in trainz. In some situations route builders may want to have their trains ride through rolling hill like areas, (like in the photo below), and there are many ways to do this, some may like to just use the default land altering tools and then run the track through, and use the smooth tool, which is a basic and effective way to do so. Some may like to use splines to create hills, like I, and this basic tutorial will help you to do so, in a few easy steps.

Now, for the tutorial.
Step #1:

Step one, have your track plan set up, with the heights you want to use, and then lay invisible track along side the tracks you want to use, in a similar route of which your trackage goes.
(Shown Below.)

Step #2:

Step 2, raise the placed track to the height you want your hills to be, weather you want the hills to go higher than the tracks, or lower, pending on weather you want, even hilltop trackage, cuts, or embankments.
(As shown below.)

Step #3:

Use the smooth tool, delete the track, and it may look like you have spiky hills, that really look more like contour lines on a topographical map. That is good.

Step 4:

Step 4, lay new track down every two or three grid lines, and set one for every path that you had originally set for the first set of tracks you created.
(As shown below.)

Step 5:

Step 5, smooth the second set of track that has been set, and with a little tweak of track placement in some areas, and playing with the height of the invisible track, you end up with what is seen below

Hope this helps some,

Thank you for taking the time to make this.
I am sure it will help me and others in future route building and it clearly is a good (or better) alternative to the regular tools.

Questions:
Currently not on my game PC (traveling for work) so can not check this myself: Would a wider spline raise more land?
Are you using a specific (wide) spline for this and if so, which one (kuid)?

Yes, I have tried this with multi-lane highway splines before and it appears to be so. The only issue with such an approach is it is very tedious and time-consuming for a result that looks about the same as one would have if he/she was adept with the terrain forming tools.

I used a similar method to create a long sweeping slope about 25 boards long and 6 wide. From a height of about 350 meters, I set a row of boards at a height of about 100 meters at the other end, then laid roads side by side from top to bottom across the 8 boards of width, ensuring the end spline points were seated at the top and bottom heights. The road splines were maybe 25 meters apart. Once those were laid and straightened with the height tool, a simple smoothing click on each road created a long smooth slope at about 6.5%. Then I just deleted the roads. Track was laid in as switchbacks, facilitating a 1% grade. (See Socal Overload's "Mulligan Grade" from Mulligan to Santa Pants Logging.)

(I'm guessing at all the numbers - I'm too lazy to look them up.)

I have used 6 lane roads as tool for creating smooth roadbed gradients when the track are uneven at the splines. Haven't used your method for terrain creation, I am going to give it a try. Thanks for tip.

Thanks for this tutorial, been wondering how people do this for a while, I'm so stupid!

Anyways, here is what I've done with it:

This method of terrain building can also be taken to the extreme , even making mountains, my "Lukla Airport " was all made this way.

Hmm that didn't work.
Maybe you can just download the Route and see all the mountains for yourself.

(I just deleted the URL as the Pic didn't show)
