Trainz in iMac with Bootcamp

Does anyone have experience/feedback on running Trainz 2010 on the iMac 27" using Bootcamp?

How is the performance and does it work OK with the ATI graphics cards?

I can't speak for Trainz on Bootcamp specifically, but the performance of a well-spec'ed i7 iMac 27" is amazing.

Barring any bootcamp driver issues, I would expect it to run perfectly.

kind regards,

chris

Gday guys, I run, or ran 2010 in Boot Camp until today.
Trainz ran like a dream - perfect, a widescreen movie UNTIL today when Boot Camp was updated.

Now? It is crap. I need to workout how to roll Boot Camp back to the previous version.
OpenGL was the pick, DirectX was rubbish, 2550X1440.
The best I've been able to do is jerky DirectX and virtually reduce this ol'fart to tears... Fair Dinkum.....

Short answer is that Trainz 2010 ran brilliantly on my Imac:
Processor: i7 @ 2.93Ghz
Memory: 16G
HDD Space: 3T (1T O/B, 2T FW800)
Vid Cd: ATI HD5750 1gig driving the 27" Monitor.....
I should do another post re this problem, but we'll see if anyone reads this and has something to offer...

I' ll be interesed to see what you find out about what went wrong with the upgraded boot camp.

I am at a fork in the road when I get my next computer (within 3 months). Do I stick with a Window machine or should I take the big leap and go iMac with the 27" screen using boot camp for Trainz.

I am surprised that there are not more people out there who have used/tried Trainz with boot camp. If in fact it works i would think it would eliminate any need for a Mac specific version of Trainz.

Chris, I understand you are a Mac person. Surely you have given it a try. At this point Trainz is the only program that is holding back from switching to a Mac.

I hit the same fork in the road Paul. It is an interesting point, considering for the money, there are many options regarding windows only machines. A good friend of mine runs several macs - MBP, Powermac & Imac. He also has several Windows machines. We are a predominantly Windows household with 3 windows only machines (2 x XP ,1 x Vista) and the Imac (Snow Leopard + Win7 64bit in Boot Camp + Win7 32bit in Parallels).
Hardware Overview:
Model Name: iMac
Model Identifier: iMac11,3
Processor Name: Intel Core i7
Processor Speed: 2.93 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 4
L2 Cache (per core): 256 KB
L3 Cache: 8 MB
Memory: 16 GB
Processor Interconnect Speed: 4.8 GT/s
Boot ROM Version: IM112.0057.B00
SMC Version (system): 1.59f2
Vid cd:
Chipset Model: ATI Radeon HD 5750
Type: GPU
Bus: PCIe
PCIe Lane Width: x16
VRAM (Total): 1024 MB
Vendor: ATI (0x1002)
Device ID: 0x68a1
Revision ID: 0x0000
ROM Revision: 113-B9710C-238
EFI Driver Version: 01.00.417
Resolution: 2560 x 1440

The 27" screen is a real hoot but any peripherals available for the Imac are also available for a Windows machine.
The only drawback as I see it with the Imac is lack of flexibility for expansion and experimentation, but give me time, my machine is still under warranty, lol.
The Imac keyboard is interesting......
Best thing about the Imac = NO BLOODY NORTONS ...... virus's (virii?) for the Mac series are virtually non existent.

Best advice that I can give you is to go and test drive the Imac before you buy....
Me? Knowing what I know now, even with the few pitfalls, I'd still buy my Imac.
I love it.

I think I have mentioned in several threads that I'm running TS2010 quite happily in Bootcamp with a 3GHtz iMac and on a Mac Pro at work (don't tell the boss).

I would go for it. The i7 iMac is an absolutely stunning machine. I don't use bootcamp personally, but I understand that compatibility is good.

I still need to know if you solve your boot camp issue. It seems to me that is the key question at this point. We have in our house 3 PC's, 2 iPad's and 2 iPhones. My son has converted from PC to iMac and he loves it.

Another big advantage I see is you don't need lots of inter-connecting cables for the iMac. I agree the 27" monitor is a sight to behold, but so is the Dell 27" monitor when paired with the right graphics card.

Another issue I need to explore is the sound. My current PC has great surround sound which really enhances the Trains experience. How is the iMac in this regard.

Awaiting your findings with boot camp.

"Another issue I need to explore is the sound. My current PC has great surround sound which really enhances the Trains experience. How is the iMac in this regard."

Eh? Sound is great. To be honest, I haven't bothered hooking up any external speakers to my mac yet, internal speakers do just fine. I play a wide variety of music and Trainz comes through just fine. If you already have ext. spkrs, hook 'em up mate.

As for the Boot Camp debacle, no luck yet, just about at the point to do a complete reinstall of Windoze, but.......

I'll post on my other thread re: the problem shortly, got to do with trainz not finding some settings/files, but after the reinstall, on first run, it tested fine - no problems, but started, farted, slipped and fell.

I have NOT upgraded my BootCamp yet, and after seeing this thread, I may not. I'm running TS2010 on a Mac Mini (the new one that came out this year), with 4GB ram, Nvidia GeForce 320M graphics card, Snow Leopard 10.6.4, and Win7/64bit. It works fine, although I really wish I could afford a high-end gaming system to make it really awesome. Oh, and I'm using Open GL. DirectX doesn't play too well with this system.

A new Mac system would probably come with the updated boot camp version. So it seems that until someone can confirm that Trainz runs under the most recent version the best bet is to not get a Mac but upgrade my old PC.

I'm so in the dark still Alan, but I'm getting used to 2010 in DirectX. Nowhere near OpenGL quality, but it appears I need to live with it.

All avenues I've searched have lead to zip mate. Very unfortunate.

Paul - I'm sorry to hear you are not going to invest in a new Imac. As I said earlier, knowing what I know now, I would still buy the Imac. A fix for Boot Camp must be in the pipeline. Trainz can't be the only game hammered.

Good luck my friend :)

Why not use the Mac version of T.A.N.E. When it comes out. The previews versions of Trainz and the Beta1 version of T.A.N.E. runs great on a my Mac natively, no Windows required. I can't wait for the Mac release in June.

Thanks Digi, being part of the beta testing team, that thought never occurred. Please note the date of these posts mate. All this was discussed a few years ago. Been testing the new T:ANE Mac version already and is quite good even on my redundant 27" Imac (2010 mid year), but back in 2010 a Mac version wasn't available so Boot Camp was the only option for Imac users. Even tried Parallels, but any way all good now.

Thanks for the reply :)

Does anyone have experience/feedback on running Trainz 2010 on the iMac 27" using Bootcamp?

I have used Trainz in a Bootcamp partition on a G5 24" iMac for years, first TS 2009, then TS 2010, then TS 2012 version 49922 (i.e., pre SP1). I started out with Window XP then used Window 7.

I now use a 27" iMac running both TS12 version 49922 and T:ANE TS2012 works great too. I din't upgrade to TS12 SP1 HF4 because the vegetation I use on my route (JVC) has not been upgraded to TS12 SP1 HF4. As for T:ANE see the following:

“…I started to explore T:ANE by initially opened C&O Hinton Division Thurmond Empties. It started off in the dark and I thought well OK, it is 6:00 AM, the sun should be up soon and I will see what the route looks like. Then it started to rain! It rained so hard I couldn't see the signals in time to stop if I had to. Luckily, I had the information panel in the upper right corner to tell me in advance what the signals were. I got half way to Thurmond and it was still raining. So I loaded Quick Drive and selected a similar consist to run out of Hinton. I could only get decent frame rate by turning everything to minimum (kept Maximum Draw Distance at 3,500 m).

I have the most powerful iMac ever made (bought specifically to run T:ANE):
Retina Display
27inch
Processor:4 GHz Intel Core i7
Memory:32 GB 1600 Mhz DDR3 SDRAM
Storage:3 TB Fusion Drive
Graphics:AMD Radeon R9 M295X 4096 MB

So, I was surprised with the performance. Maybe it is because I am running T:ANE on a Bootcamp partition with Window 8.1 and this is not accessing all of the potential of the iMac. I look forward to trying out the Mac version of T:ANE when it comes out in June. …

I have now downloaded other routes (Loleta Port and Easy Kentucky) and they both work well with default T:ANE settings and Draw Distance set to maximum (15,000 m).
