Trainz Graphics Engine (Jet)

Indeed, but the problem is that some people bump threads without adding any useful information, which in some cases can cause other issues. I know some threads keep going for a while, but normally they are updated frequently.

I will comment regarding my own former association with Trainz.

I kept threads running for years regarding maritime interests in Trainz. It is only be reference to the wealth of information on some of the older threads that is is possibly to realize what Trainz is capable of once you explore the many possiblities outside of running trains. I had miles of docks, horse drawn barges on the canal and boats running up to the Ellesmere Port Canal Complex using the locks.

However I discovered that the Blender Game Engine was capable of making 12 miles routes so my maritime interests are now concentrated only on that. B

I'm guessing that the replies were fairly frequent though - I don't have a problem with people keeping old threads going as long as the information is relevant. Anyway, the Archive feature is there to view old threads but not edit them.

Aha! Not only bumped, but totally off topic as well now!

However, I'd not seen this one before and found it an interesting read.

For what it’s worth, and hopefully back on topic, wouldn’t a new Trainz, incorporating a replacement for the Jet engine, be a totally new simulator? Hmm. I wonder how successful that might be.

A new engine will be no substitute for good artistry and fine creations. Anyone thinking it will be is on a journey to disappointment.

It’s not what you’ve got; it’s what you can do with it.

And with a new engine, you can probably take all the content you have now on your computer, and throw it in the recycle bin, because it probably won't work anymore. Thanks, but no thanks, I am happy with what I have now.

and a grossly out dated engine just cripples good artistry, fine creations and their potential. Great content in an ancient, incompetent rendering/game engine is like putting a silk hat on a pig it always has been just take a look around the rest of the computer gaming world.

As long as it keeps going (not for very long I think) its ok..
Anyways the people at Outerra have already mentioned the incorporation of railroads-drivable trains somewherein that vast forum!
And splines are built-in already (and it still at pre-alpha)

As I've said in other posts on this subject, a lot of this has to do with the cost of the game development tools and the game engine. There is a great cost associated with the development software, which can run into the 100's of thousands of Dollars. This does not include the maintenance licenses and the per-seat licensing that goes along with the software. Later on, once the product is released, there are royalties to be paid on top of this as well. Game developers also do not always make use of the current hardware because they cannot afford the latest versions that take this into account. In some cases, the upgrade plug-ins are very expensive too so this is why we don't see a lot of new games, except by the biggest developers, such as EA, that can afford to do so, that make use of the latest graphics hardware.

Now having said this, yes, I am aware that N3V Software inherited this game engine from Auran, and Auran was the developer of this game engine. But then remember too that this is a small company and they are making use of the tools that they already have. I agree that it would be nice to see something much newer, but then we'll run into the other end with broken content because the assets will no longer be compatible. We have to remember too that many of the assets that we still use today were created over 10 years ago. They were created using GMax which didn't handle normal mapping well, if at all, and the objects don't have that nice new look that many of the new ones today. The problem is if they were to come out with a brand new product, which would break everything already there, they'd lose their huge customer base and their current revenue stream.

At this time we really do not know what N3V is doing. They may very well be adding more to this game engine, or perhaps upgrading the program to a new version with a compatibility mode. Like many of these posts here, much of what I've said too is pure speculation on this point.

Possibly - as some here have gathered, I don't like people bumping threads more than 6 months old without good reason.

Shane

Shane, in case you haven't noticed you are not a moderater on this forum. What you like or don't like has no more weight than any other user.

If you don't like bumped threads, perhaps it's best not to comment on them?

Then they'll die away, or not, depending if they are useful, or not.

I am aware of that, although if I was a moderator, things would probably change round here.

I feel it is necessary to comment on such threads otherwise the poster will not learn anything. (I can tell you that I'm not the only one who comments on bumped threads either)

Shane

I can see what you mean there, but I am doing my best to show people that one can only learn from something if someone tells them what they have done wrong...

Shane

See my answer above on that one. If I don't do it, who else is likely to? It's probably the best way of educating forum users as to what is seen as acceptable and what can cause problems in a forum.
