Trainz crashing at night

After a few seconds into night mode in driver, trainz crashes and returns to the desktop. In the day or late afternoon (close to dark), it works fine. Not sure if this is necessary but I run Trainz on an Alienware M14x with 1.5gb graphics card. I've had this problem for a while and I haven't played in Night Mode for a long time due to this problem. Does anyone have the same problem? Or does anyone know a solution?

Cheers, CityRailTrainspotter (CRT)

Shane,
would you be able to point me to any additional information on this known issue? I am seeing it consistently with my 2010 install.
Also, would the potential fix of updating installed content involve downloading the entire asset, or just dependencies related to the headlights?

Thanks!

Joe

I'm also interested to hear which combo is involved as well. Usually the crash at night bug is specific to particular locomotives/rolling stock.

Shane

Right now, I'm running Andy's EK3 ST and EVWR exclusively. Many locos/rolling stock from JR.

I may try some experiments with specific lash ups to narrow it down to maybe one or two content sources. I totally get that it could be an issue with headlight scripting.

Any assists from others with insight on this issue is appreciated!

Thanks, guys!

Joe

Check JR for updates. Especially, check the TS12-SP1 updates. You may have to backdate the build version to 3.4.

It's best to stick with TS2010 versions, although I know that it does not happen with the locomotives I use nowadays on TS12 (SP1, although it didn't happen on TS12 either).

I've had this happen with TS12- SP0 and when there were a lot of locomotives in operation. I've also seen this happen when there were a bunch of switch engines with rotating and blinking gyro lights. It's definitely a bug and may have something to do with the video driver. Sometimes the video cards can't handle a lot of light sources particularly with DirectX. I never tried anything else once I had the problem other than removing locomotives and not running at night. Try running in Open/GL and see if that helps with the problem.

All,
I updated the JR locomotive dependencies last night as a first step. Not sure if that is where I need to be focusing my efforts, but testing will have to wait until the weekend. Paying the bills will have to come first!

I will post an update once I know a little more.

Thanks to everyone for the advice!

Joe

Greetings all.

I run Trainz 2010, and my primary route (London Wembley Yard\St Pancras to Lille in France, including HS1, LGV Nord, and the Channel Tunnel) has had to be operated in daylight hours only because of this problem - until I read this thread for some insight. I originally thought that the various sky textures I tried were the culprits causing the night crashes, but after reading this thread I figured out that it was caused by the headlight scripting used by the old TGV SE locos I use to power Eurostars - or more specifically the Eurostar style paintshed repaint of that model authored by "IckleTigress".

I worked out a solution that seems to work well if you can tolerate locos not using their headlights at night - not very realistic, but I am an operations oriented Trainzer, not a rivet counter. Add the rule called "Loco Lighting Control Rule" to your session, move it to the very top of the rule list, and change it's settings so that locos turn their lights on only during daylight hours, for example between 1000 and 1400 hours. Since doing this it hasn't crashed at night once. If you can tolerate the lack headlights in the wee hours, this solution might work for you.

Well hopefully your solution helps everyone, I cant say the same because I have never experienced this problem in any of my trainz versions.
