Trainz-build 3.8!!!!

By comparison JAFA
I've just uploaded some updates to the DLS and see that from build 3.8 .im meshes are going the same way as .pm's and LOD will be de rigeur. Looks like that's me done. In the last two years I've had some good times making content. OK, I use SketchUp I admit. But, if it hadn't been for that and RubyTMix I wouldn't have been able to contribute some content for wider usage for those who wanted it. Six months ago I went to upload 2.8 assets and got told 2.9 is now the lowest so my 2.8 stuff is useless to upload to the DLC anymore even though it works perfectly in TS12 to which I updated fairly recently which I found to be generally a waste of time. The only thing it's good for is a full list of assets available which my 2009 SP3 v2.0 (my preferred version) and 2009 SP4 v3.3 CM's don't capture anymore.
By-the-way, my most successful asset to date has been my version of the original surveyor grid which Auran discontinued in 2009 SP4. Over 15,300 downloads since March 2012. Guess there's been a lot of unhappy users unable to wipe out textures and start again. Good luck to those people who know LOD and it's applications. I was happy where I was with what I knew. I'll keep following the forums because some of the screenshots are unbelievably fantastic otherwise "It's goodnight from me and it's a goodnight from me". Goodnight.
P.S. As long as they're complete, I've found build 1.3 assets work perfectly in native mode in TS12.

Stationmistress, if you indeed intended 2.8 as Malc indicated instead of 3.8, and you would consider NOT uploading to the DLS, I'm willing to make your config files for you. They did change a lot in the configs starting with TS2009 (2.9), but the gap isn't too difficult to bridge. It does generally make for more efficient content, and its actually pretty easy. Keep in mind pretty much anything built to 2009 standards will look and work even in the newest versions of Trainz and TB of 2.9 should be the goal.

Gospel truth! My TS12 content manager pre-SP1 is 3.6. On the DLS preview page under the heading:

ASSET WARNINGS
: Indexed meshes are not supported for traincars as of trainz-build 3.8. It is recommended that you upgrade 'hash-d2\kuid2 515726 500003 1\class50_body\class50_body.im' to a LOD mesh.
: The texture 'class50_body/env_glass.tga' is a uniform color.
: The texture 'class50_shadow/black.tga' is a uniform color.

(This is for an update I'm uploading)

@RRSignal Thanks for the offer. I may take you up on it.

I would read this as meaning that build 3.8 is coming down the tracks and it will not be able to be used to make content using meshes with an .im extension. It does not seem to say that content made in prior versions can not be uploaded. I think it unlikely that for the DLS they will jump from the present cut-off of build 2.9 to 3.8 in one jump.

Stationmistress, was your content rejected? If not, you still have lot's of time to make content with TS12 and upload it.

Does this mean the TS14 is on it's way? I wonder

Nope! Still being accepted albeit with the warning for traincars. Current build on the DLS is 3.7.

At a guess its a typo
I can confirm that is NOT a typo.

If you upload train vehicles without LOD, you will get a message during the approval stage about what she just wrote: The asset will give a warning starting 3.8.
In other words: The next patch and/or version of Trainz will up the CM version to 3.8 and in that version train vehicles without LOD will give an error.

Again: Not a typo; this is a warning content creators get during upload if applicable for future versions.

I did not get the warning for other assets, so even if you no longer can or want to upload train vehicles, you can still create other material.

I think it's a good idea, because models are getting heavier and heavier on polys and no one is using LOD's, their is way to much 40k+ poly locomotives without LOD which of cause is causing trainz to bog down.

That's my opinion anyways.

OK not a typo.
Could have been worded better though, it seems to be saying you can't use an im mesh, what it should be saying is you must or they would prefer you incorporate LOD in traincars, fairly obviously you still need actual IM meshes! for lod. Would have thought that the warning should have been Traincar assets not using LOD are not supported in build 3.8 that would remove any confusion.

Not entirely unexpected re comments by Windwalkr some time back, I think along the lines of lod may be made compulsory, if people persisted in not using it.

Which brings us on to the next question, is 3.8 the next Trainz? in which case are TS12 SP1 users are going to be left with the current problems?

Yeah, I agree on LOD in train vehicles being a good thing.
As for the warning:
I decided to upload the only train vehicle I ever made without LOD as I considered it to much work. If I would not have had the warning, I would have left it that way but after the warning I uploaded an update with LOD.
Which brings us on to the next question, is 3.8 the next Trainz? in which case are TS12 SP1 users are going to be left with the current problems?
It might simply be both.
I think (but correct me if I am wrong) both TS2010SP4 and TS12 (out of the box without any patches, so build 46xxx) started on 3.4.

3.8 can be the next Trainz (which I think will be called TS15 since TS12 was released in April 2011 so 14 would have been out already).
3.8 can also simply be TS12 SP2.
Both is fine with me and I prefer sooner then later; lets leave the drama around SP1 behind. Or will we get the same "the older crap was better" discussions, no matter what they release? NO, don't answer that; let's just find out and not spoil the fun.

What is LOD? And I model in SketchUp also. I just don't upload assets to the DLS. Would using LOD make a difference? Whatever that is!

LOD is Level-Of-Detail as in your first mesh that is rendered up close is a super high detail model, the next mesh is slightly less detail when you move away, that is LOD.

All video games have it, it looks funny in EVE Online, the space station is a chunk of triangles then as you move closer it turns into a real good space station.

Just verified, curent build is 2.9 for upload.
Asset X uses an obsolete trainz-build number. Trainz-build numbers below 2.9 are no longer supported

It's really not too difficult to set up a .lm file. And it only applies to kind: traincar. This is the recommended method anyway, you can still make your mesh files as per usual, just do a couple levels of detail for the sake of performance.

when i install a railcar that's for 2.9 and i put it on ts2 mac
it says this
