Trainz 2012 runs very poorly compared to 2010 on my PC

Trainz 2010 runs excellent on my PC, but 2012 runs really slugglishly with average frame rates around 15-20 fps. I use the exact same AA (12xS) and AF (8x) settings set in Nvidia Inspector for both 2010 and 2012, but the frame rates are basically cut in half when using 2012. Cutting down on AA and AF doesn't improve frame rates that much either.

I've tried cutting down on the graphic options in 2012 like setting tree quality, texture quality and distance way down (5000m down to 2000m), but without much of a gain in frames.

Is there such a change in 2012 compared to 2010 to make such a difference in frame rates between the two?

Many thanks for any and all replies.

If anything, you should be getting better performance out of TS12. Have you tried changing graphics modes? With that card, you're probably better running in DirectX not OpenGL. If that doesn't help, a GPU driver update would be in order too, from the looks of it.

That's odd as TS12 frame rates are slightly up on 2010 here, Phenom 1090T and 1GB GTX460, using same driver as you and same Nvidia settings for 2010 and TS12. OpenGL or DirectX? TS12 fully patched up to 49922?
Same drive? if not check it's not got some kind of problem.
May just need an EDR and a defrag that often improves poor performance on a new install.

Check TrainzOptions.txt hasn't got a different screen resolution in it, if it has just delete it, as it works without that entry, however odd things have happened when it's there and not the same as the actual screen res.

I've tried both DirectX and OpenGL with hardly any difference. 2012 is patched up to 49922. I just ran a defrag on my system a week ago so that can't be the issue.

I'll double check the TrainzOption.txt file when I get home. I'll definitely reply back with any updates.

So I looked at the TrainzOption.txt file and saw that it had a resolution which was different than my monitor's resolution. I removed the resolution from the file as suggested and my frame rates shot up. Many thanks for that tip, clam1952.

I was using the Norfolk and Western Appalachian -Eastern Coal Train session as a benchmark and from 15-18 fps before to about 25-30 afterwards. I think that's got to be a taxing session and route as most other delivered sessions run well above 40 fps with many at 60 fps.

Still get that annoying pause when switching from cab view to external view as the textures load. I guess there's no much I can do about that.

Again, many thanks for the replies and advice!

Glad it was that simple.
Yes Norfolk and Western is a bit taxing, I think the pause problem is a bug, hopefully getting fixed in Service Pack 1, if and when it appears!

Im running very very similar specs to yours ( same graphics card actually too) and really dont have much of a problem ( other than the usual in yards where theres a crapload of cars but thats my own fault!). I've knocked my draw distance down some ( dont need it to be all the way out) and i run in DirectX specifically all the time. 2012 has been leaps and bounds better for me over 10 so its odd that yours is working the other way around.

Excellent tip as I have seen a dramatic increase in frame rates my asset heavy route :Y:

Well, with the change I made to the TrainzOption.txt file, 2012 is much more enjoyable now. The only route that sort of bogs down my PC is Norfolk and Western Appalachian. I suppose I could tone down the distance setting from 5000m down to about 2000m , but I enjoy the long view.

You may want to consider changing out some of the trees in that route for others, using the replace asset tool. I understand others have had success with this method.

You'll find that route in particular to be taxing because of all the spline plants along the tracks. Spline objects are notorious for killing frame rates because of the way they're created. In my own route I avoid grass splines and other plant splines for this reason. The only splines I use are retaining walls, an occasional fence, telegraph poles, power lines (selectively), and some utility poles in some places.
