Trainz 2010 vs. 12 with these specs

Picked up a cheap PC for trains, debating between 12, 2010, or 06 off Amazon. Machine has an AMD Phenom II X2 560 dual core at 3.3GHZ, Nvidia GeForce 210 1GB card, and 2GB ram that I'll soon boost to 3 or 4GB(max). What do you guys think?

To run Trainz 2012 or Trainz 2010, you need at least 4GB of ram. You be best at Trainz Railroad Simulator 2006. You would have to backdate a lot of content, but you can't backdate routes.

Feed your machine 4GB of RAM and your Video card to a budget GT610 and it should handle Trainz 2010 or even 12 perfectly fine.

TS12 will run with 2 gigs of memory if you have 32 bit windows that is the maximum it can use anyway. The core engine of TS12 is uses less resources than TRS2006 and can make use of dual cores which TRS2006 is unable to do. However much of the content made for TS12 is higher poly and more demanding in resources so you may have to be a bit selective in what you choose to run, lower the distance slider in the performance sliders to gain a few more frames per second if you need to.

I'm running the 64 bit Windows 7. Just got the 210 yesterday because the old card crapped out, reason I got a deal on the machine. With 4GB any chance I can run 12? I find it hard to believe 12 uses less resources than 2006.

I do as well. But, it would be best bet to have 4GB in the computer your going to install Trainz on. Also, welcome to the wonderful world of PC Trainz. There is a whole bunch of content avalible for download.

I actually ran TS10 and TS12 (briefly) on a 220 and then quickly upgraded to a 480 then up from there afterwards. Both cards handled TS12 okay. The FPS weren't terrific, but it worked. Adjust your sliders accordingly.

Use this card to get your machine up and running then swap out the card later for something better.

That's the plan, thinking 06 should at least run pretty smooth, anyone else think so? Don't want to waste $$$ on 2010 or 12 just to have it constantly freeze up.

That's a good plan. Consider upgrading though because the older product isn't supported and you know what that's like.... Also after you get the product, register it so it appears on your station line. This way the community won't bug you about it.

The DLS is still active for 2006 right? I used to have a copy years ago, but lost the CD and serial number.

Well if you think about it the code has been better optimized to use things like dual core, and better use of the graphics card TRS2006 did most of its processing on a single core of the CPU so it will make better use of your hardware. Just avoid the higher end content.

Yes it does.

If you registered the software, and are still using your same login you can go into Planet Auran, copy your cd-key and use that when installing the program. If you can't remember your previous login, contact the helpdesk and they can merge your accounts together so your software will be registered properly. Without registration, you won't be able to download from the DLS.

TS2009 was the first dual core version that also pushed processing down to the GPU, TS12 has slightly better optimised code.
