Trainz 2010 now available on Steam

I think it's brilliant to see Trainz on Steam. For those who keep ranting on it. Sod off. Valve, tightening a noose? Really?
yes really.
downloaded the Steam Install file and it appeared to install quickly enough, but then after I closed the install window, it was trying to update Steam, but always keeps seeming to stall and refuse to update more than 30% of Steam. Delete and re-install three times, always with the same results. Can't re-install RailWorks without Steam
,And that is just one of the milder irritations over at RW
No Steam, no Trainz no play.
Valve is one of the best companies in the industry. ... I've not seem a large fault, yet. I trust Valve and I'm starting to trust Auran again.

I think they both made great decisions here.
Ever since RS changed to RW and went to a Steam distribution, the ordinary users' problems with installation, authentication and forced updating have been too numerous to mention.

If Trainz ever becomes a Steam only program will be the worst thing to ever happened to it. Some people may enjoy having Steam dictate if and when they can play a game on their own computers, good for them but not here, thank you very much.

For more about how "good" life under Steam is read this thread from those how are experiencing it now.

Not sure I follow you there? I could wipe Trainz completely and then re-install to whatever patch level I wanted, without a single new download. What down load? Every file I need is on an external backup disk or on the install disks I bought. Don't even need a connection to the Internet to have someone else decide whether or not to let me play.

Agreed but Steam should (in theory) remove the pain that some computer users - not me I hasten to add - feel with manual patching and Trainz has certainly had its share of reports in that respect. However I do acknowledge that Steam can be a bit invasive with the updates if you don't switch off auto-updates, particularly as RS.com almost inevitably break something that has to be patched again after a few days (assuming they acknowlege it as such and not just users not "understanding" the software). On the flipside, if Auran start releasing DLC through Steam, part of the acceptance process is (presumably) that it should install seemlessly. So where I had to mess about moving and importing ja files etc. to get S&C 2009 into TS2009 should be a non-issue.

If you have a disc based game that uses Steam as DRM as well as for updates, then you avoid having to download the whole game again when you do install.

Although i believe that Trainz is far superior to MSTS ( which i still use ) and RailFail ( which i will never use again ).

If Trainz becomes a Steam only release, i will never use it again.

IKB.

I feel this type of Elitist attitude is no longer one or two people. It's sad to see people so biased they make up silly names, and claim to never use a program again for silly reasons.

Martinvk, you have good points but I feel you miss some points. If Trainz went Steam only I'd be shocked but I wouldn't stop using it. I'd like it tho if we had the option of Steam or No Steam if it comes to that.

I have many good things to say about Steam and Valve and I have some bad but the good her outweigh the bad. Steam introduces the game to a wider audience, less hassle with patching, more money in Aurans pocket.

The last one if my major point. Auran needs the money badly. We get a new Trainz every year as proof of this. If they had the money they could maybe make that Trainz X dream we all had a year ago. The all new, reboot, of Trainz. A whole new beginning, a new Jet Engine maybe.

Companies are around for profit, not your satisfaction. Auran putting Trainz on Steam will result in a bit more profit than it would have before.

Complain, cry, be biased all you want. No rail sim is above the other. Everyone deserves a fair chance, and if they fail afterwards, the mature thing to do is to simple say their name. Not some made up name.

Sorry mods for this semi on-topic, semi rant, I'm tired of these elitist groups on here.

One advantage of Steam in terms of purchasing DLC, is that there's no limit on the number of times you can download. The DRM for some of the original KRS third party content only allowed three installs before you had to plead for a new licence. Other full games i've purchased (Far Cry 2, I think) had similar restrictions on the number of times you can install. Wth Steam, it's yours for life on as many PC's as you like (only running one at a time of course) or at least until they go bust at which point I assume everything would be unlocked and could be played without the Steam wrapper.

When you have some experience of life, i may listen to you what you have to say.

But i doubt it.

I'm tired of these elitist groups on here.

If being cheated out of $100 and resenting it is Elitist, then I am one of the Elite, just after Valve/steam started I purchased an online only game from them, and when I tried to activate it with the code they sent me in an email, it was refused, the reason given was that it was a keygen number, I sent heaps of emails to try to sort it out, and am still waiting for even one reply, well not really, I gave up years ago.

As far as being tired of these Elitist groups is concerned, you are showing a very immature attitude in that if we do not agree with you then we do not have the right to an opinion, well guess what mate, I have an opinion, it is mine, and I have the same right to express it as you do to express yours, and if you do not like it STIFF, pick up your little ball and go home.

Cheers David

Similar happened to me and I don't need to make up a silly name and I don't belong to any elitist group, I don't like and won't touch Steam, that is my opinion and my right and tough on anyone who attempts to persuade me otherwise as it isn't going to work.

Haven’t we enough with N3V dictating to us on the use of the game without steam sticking there ore in as well?

DRM is DRM. Still can't see a need to have a third party manage my program.

All DRM does is make the honest user suffer and give some nerd in his Mom's basement a new puzzle to figure out.

As for opinions, let's post a negative thread or two about Auran and Trainz and see how quick that everyone is entitled to an opinion mantra changes.

Dave......

I thought so too, but after visiting half a dozen computer and game shops and finding myself unable to locate a copy of ArmA2 (or its brand new standalone mission disc) I bit the bullet and finally got Steam. So far, so good.

Besides, Steam might seem bad, but Ubisoft's DRM is worse (if your connection to their server is interrupted, for any reason, for any amount of time, the game stops working immediately)

This is difficult, but we must use our power and just don't buy our beloved Titles in order to send the message that we will not be bullied into sevices that we do not choose to. That is the only way to make our message clear. (In recent times I skipped MW2, Assassins Creed 2, Silent Hunter 5 and also ArmA 2) Be strong.
