Trainz 2010, Mac OS, and WINE

Ok, so as a Christmas gift I got the 2010 Trainz Simulator. Unfortunately there are no Windows computers in the house, and I do not own a copy of windows. I've been using Wine to run the program and it installed fine. However, now after hitting Start, I get a message saying that my current hardware or software is unable to communicate with Trainz. I have a Macbook Pro with the latest version of OSX Leopard an NVIDEA GeForce 9400M Video Card.

What can I do?

EDIT: I've gotten it to run using Crossover Games, but now it keeps crashing after a few minutes into a run.

You probably have achieved more than most of us did -- I wasn't even able to run it with Crossover Games. The good news is that you ought to get at least as far with WINE as you did with Crossover, since Crossover is based on Wine (the authors of Crossover claim to be the leading commercial contributor to the Wine project). Unfortunately, I do not know how. I'm not a Wine expert. Hopefully someone else is.

Note that you may want to share some more details how you got this far. Trainz 2010 is listed as "known not to work" with CrossOver Games (and probably thus with Wine) according to the database as Codeweavers

It won't run in Wine in Linux here either, 2009 will, less content manager though.

The trouble with Wine is they get application A working in release X which invariably breaks application B C and D. I gave up as it can take weeks of research and fiddling to get things working in Wine, what tweaks etc that work with one release doesn't always work with the with the next, it's easier just to run things in Windows to start with.
If someone manages to get it to work in Linux, the same settings, usually related to registry entries, should work for OSX assuming it's the same version of Wine. Note latest version may not be the one that works best with whatever application.

Edit: someone has it working in Ubuntu see here: http://forums.auran.com/trainz/showthread.php?t=61670

I managed to install in Wine on a Compaq Presario but wasn't worth the effort, trains don't run in massive jerks.
OpenBve runs a treat, but it is not Trainz..... ;)

Might be worth it to run it through bootcamp and an XP install. I have 2009 running on a Macbook Pro 2.16 core duo with an x1600 video card fairly decent in windowed mode. Well over a four year old machine.

I tried Wine and crossover but always lost content manager with either. I get about 30 to 40 FPS in 2009 with this set up in windowed mode with sliders on normal (less or more depending on the route), but older versions like 2004 and 2006 are smooth. Even tried Parralells, save your money on that.

Hope that helps.

Dave.......

Edit: Any built in route in 2009 is a slide show at best. Tidewater runs great in 2006 with sliders maxed, 12 FPS if lucky in 2009.
