Trainz 2009

I'm confused. My copy of trainz 2009 arrived on Sat but was nicked by my wife as a my Christmas present so have not had any chance to use it. Why am I confused? Well some people say trainz 2009 is the best thing since sliced bread, other say it is a load of rubbish. Have I wasted my wife's money on buying it or is it as good as other people say?

I await replies

Happy Christmas

My Opinion

In my few days back into Trainz (dropped off after fighting problems T04 & T06), it looks like it's good for users new to Trainz, but looking for better quality then the other train sims out there.

Previous users of Trainz may, or may not, like it depending on the content they run & what they like to do. Seems good for design and what I call scenic driving, but so far lacking in the actual operations (ie operating industries, moving cargo, etc), but I've only had it about 2 weeks ,so YMMV.

It's been said a thousand times before, but this release is the first of two. It enables the Trainz Community to build assets and routes for the Engineers Edition that will be released early next year. Without this current World Builder Edition, the Engineers Edition could never be. This version is the horse - the cart comes next!

In the meantime, this release has plenty of content (albeit from previous editions) for people like yourself who may only want to play rather than build. If you have earlier versions of Trainz the benefits may not be immediately clear, but they will be as new content becomes available.

Most of the negative response on this forum has been from people who really only want to play trainz or create routes from pre-made assets. They can't see any real difference between TRS 2009 and TRS 2006 other than a few minor tweaks, but it's what's under the bonnet, and what the future holds that counts. New assets are beginning to appear already, but the next EE release should contain heaps.

Just cast your mind back to the day they released the first CD player. For the first few months there were only a couple of hundred CD titles available. Now there are millions. It all takes time.

Looks really good

I enjoyed trs2004 and never got tired of it, but 2009 has the look of being even better. It is easy to follow if you are acquainted with 2004, but has enough new content to make it even more addictive.
As has already been said, it will only get better with new content being added and updates and fixes to hone off the rough edges. It will be a great launch pad for Engineers edition, if what I have been reading about Engineers is correct.
Personally, I don't think you have any worries about money being wasted, but please let me know what you think when you finally unwrap it.

Thanks for replies guys, they have put my mind at rest and I look forward to getting my hands on it on Christmas Day. It's just that when you reach my age the mind is not so active and small things worry it.

Regards
Ian
