Trainz 2009 - Unstable!

This software (Trainz 2009) is the most unstable software I have ever purchased. Being a developer for almost 20 years this is totally unacceptable.... using Vista (64 bit), mostly driver related...... I have totally given up on this product.... released way to early!

Thumbs down!

Not so unstable in XP, but it has it's moments. Luckily, I use 2006 anyway.:D Perhaps you should shelve it until better drivers come along, or until you install Windows 7; I hear that's pretty nice.

Trainz uses bits of Windows that many other programs do not. As a result it runs best on Intel and ASUS motherboards since they have the most solid drivers.

Vista (64 bit) is notorious for not having drivers made to the same robustness as XP 32 bit, there was a recent article on tomshardware .com about the issue.

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/64-bit-vista-install,2301.html

These days normal commercial programmers do not have to program the hardware directly they use the drivers supplied by the manufacturers and they basically put their efforts into what sells and try to keep costs down. Only the largest really have the resources to create decent 64 bit drivers for Vista. Forty years ago it was different you programmed the devices directly. Pain in the neck when a new device came out. I have noticed that the younger programmers without this experience tend to have different expectations.

By the way it is perfectly stable on my ASUS motherboard with an ATI 3850 video card under 32 bit XP.

Interesting that I have an Asus board with 32 bit XP as well. I believe any instability I suffer in 2009 is actually from content, as I refuse to fix all that stuff...again!

Does that mean you're volunteering to do a muuuch better job? Seeing as you've been a developer for nearly 20 years and all that... ?

I think you meant to say that 64 bit Vista was released way too early... Auran's software can hardly be expected to run properly when the hardware drivers are unstable.

Gigabyte Mobo, AMD Phenom X3 Proc, 4GB Ram, Geforce 9800gtx, XP Home - extremely stable for ts2009.

...no problems here...!

 AMD 64x2, 2.1ghz, etc...
I have Vista SP2 on 32bit, Trainz is installed on C:/TS2009.

Instant response/load in TS, CMv2, CCP.

Instant entry into the game.

Times are from 10 to 20 seconds for loading.

I would not wish to hate something I don't know about...

...tried...failed...trying again...

Well seems my last post here has been deleted, why and for what reasons I do not know, however I will supply this comment.
Generally when a game seems "unstable" it is most likely a problem with your computer.
Check your settings such as graphics, drive, etc.
Also do make sure you are not running alot of "hi-poly" content in your game as this may cause unwanted performance if you do not have the gear to run it.
Although I do not run TS2009, I have heard alot about it and my opinion is that it very young, we mustn't expect a child to walk when you tell him/her to! So we must not expect TS2009 to be perfect either, rather we can help by contributing content that we have tested over and over to make sure it is stable.
Auran is trying new things-great things with Trainz, they have been since Pre SP3 Trainz, and look where it has gotten them, yes there have been some rough sections of road, but we have an excellent game, and an even better community.
If that doesn't make TS2009 stable and worth it...I don't know what does!;)

Cheers and hope you get this figured out soon,
Woody

Agree 100%!

But keep in mind... I'm a developer on Wall Street... if the business had many issues with software that I developed... I would be out of a job... a game should be treated no different.... it's brings in revenue! I/m not looking for all the bells and whistles, just stability. I have Vista 64 bit and XP Professionsal, both have stability issues, but XP is by far more stable.

So what I'm saying is.... test and retest until you have a comfort factor. Reading many post on here.... I believe they are not there... since I purchased this software... it's PRODUCTION ready... so I have the right to state my option!

I totally agree that you have a right to your opinion and I do agree somewhat that Auran tends to release their content before it is ready.
But also keep in mind that much of what is in the game is third party, meaning that alot of the content in the game was not created by Auran, but rather by members of this community.
It is perhaps the greatest and sometimes most complicated part of Trainz.

Cheers,
Woody
