Trainz 2009 Returning Player

A few years ago I played Trainz 2009 and really liked the editor and took advantage of the many things I could get from the Download Station particularly GWR-based content.

I recently played the rival Railworks 2013 which is good but I cannot get the hang of the editor - hence I have decided to give Trainz another go.

I still have the Trainz 2009 disc so have reinstalled the game no problems. However much of the content I remember once downloading from the Download Station doesn't seem to either exist or be hosted anymore by the users. I realise that with it being 4 years later this isn't much of a surprise.

I would be willing to buy a newer version of Trainz but wanted to first ask other users whether:

1. It is time to move on from Trainz 2009
2. What would be a good newer version (if not the latest)
3. What is user content like as far as GWR things and the free access and downloads that was previously available.

What I don't want is to buy a new game and find that the editing experience is not as good as it used to be and that things I would want to add-in do not exist or I have to pay a lot for.

Perhaps I can get some advice on this, that would be much appreciated.

Rail works 2013/ my opinion

I just installed Train simulator 2013.

I like the Driver mode my self, how ever creating my own route seemed more complicated...
also the menu options are very limited...

rolling stock limited options.

track splines few choices.

Not much scenery choices very limiting.

The terrain editing is hard to say the least.

I couldn't test a train on my track plan...

I guess it will take time to learn a different process...

I like the realistic locomotive operation and the crisp audio also seeing the rocking motion when going over rough track.

The "HUD" display seems user friendly ...

I'm returning from 09 myself. from what I've read by skimming the threads 10 seems to be the best version in a lot of people's opinion. 12 sounds buggy like 09 was

TS12 (without SP1) is OK, apart from the merge crash bug. As for SP1, a lot of bugs have been reported - I have a thread covering most of these in the TS12 forum (TS12 SP1 Bugs Thread).

Trainz 2010 is a good choice, solid performance and a good combination between supporting the newer content and the older content. Without SP1, Trainz 12 is a good choice as well, but be prepared for the script error (saying from experience) and the merge bug that Shane was talking about.
