Trainz 2006 and 2009 on seperate laptops

I'm hooked on Trainz. I would like to portal from laptop to laptop through my own router.
Have browsed forums but am overwhelmed. Can what I want be done without live internet connection? Thanks for any input.

You have to have an internet connection to connect to the iportal server. It would be great to be able to use IPs, but we can't.
