Train 2012 info

If TS12 had included all the other stuff it would have been a massive download, it's large enough as it is and would probably have required an extra DVD or even two, for the content thus putting the price up, I think N3V had to draw the line somewhere. New large routes or old same as before stuff and nothing much new. Personally I'm quite happy that a large amount of items and routes I don't need or use are not cluttering up TS12.

My experience has been that TS12 is the best performing Trainz ever...........if you got the hardware to run it! Sure, only a few routes are included, but there's plenty of content to build your own routes.

TS2010 content to TS12

Thanks for your answer Shane.

If you have a purchased copy of TS2010 can the contents (including routes/sessions) be used in TS12?

That is: loaded into its Content Manager or something like that, or must it be played in the seperate application?

I know it says TS12 is backward compatible with 2010 content, but I just thought that would be stuff from DLS etc., which as has previously been mentioned DLS has much of.

Cam,

This is quite possible. It means copying in the JA files from your TS2010 install into the TS12 install then registering your TS2010 serial number in TS12. Once you do that, you can download the updated content from the DLS because there are lots of errors in the older stuff that needs correcting.

About the errors. The errors always existed in the content but were never reported. Instead the errors were ignored by the program and the simulation continued along as though nothing was wrong to a point. The problem with doing things this way is there is a performance hit as the simulation has to step through each and every line of each config file, skipping errors, ignoring broken scripts, etc. This extra works causes major performance issues and worse, major crashes to the desktop! As time went on, N3V started with more strict error-checking. This started in TRS2006 and has gotten more and more strict with compatibility mode in TRS2009 and TRS2010 allowing older content to work without repairs. Starting with the last SPs for TRS2010 and now TS12, there is no longer a compatibility mode. All content must be repaired to work properly.

The repairs are not difficult, just time consuming if you have a lot of content. The errors range from missing textures, typographical errors in config files, and broken scripts. Most of the issues are fixable outside of the scripting ones for me. Anything I couldn't fix, and wasn't using, got deleted. Starting earlier this year, or was it last year? I can't remember when, an initiative started to clean up the DLS. This was created to bring older content up to current standards, making the revised content error free. With over 220,000 plus items on the DLS, the process has taken time, but quite a bit of the content has been cleaned up.

Well said John, especially the time consuming portion. As with anything else, the more you do, the better you become. I moved the TS10 content that I felt was needed or necessary (mostly US) into TS12 as CDP's and then repaired any errors in small batches by type, such as locomotives, rolling stock, scenery items, etc. I am semi retired, so time is not a major factor. One of the benefits of having error free content is in performance. I am getting 30 to 50 FPS on major routes using a fairly modest ($600) spec desktop computer. I can now better understand why N3V removed so much of the legacy content from TS12. If they had not done so, you would have needed a $1,200 computer to run it smoothly.

John, I have a question arising from your thread here please : Is there an easier way to check what content is without hickups and problems before uploading , other than going through all the errors ,missing dependencies obsolete stuff etc that affect the performance of a version. In other words - is there a place or a way where one can look first to see what one can dl or upload without this stuff that has to be corrected first, or are the answers all scattered all over.

It's the latter - scattered all over. Although... there has been, however, updated TRS2010 content uploaded to the DLS. Remember the stuff you are bringing into TS12 is built-in. These are in Auran Jet Archives, or .JA files. The content will have updates, but what you are updating are those items that have been extracted from the archive files. There is no tool available to us, except those in the know, that can extract content from the .JA files. If you look in the TRS2010 Support forum, you'll see a sticky regarding the fixed content from TS2010.

TRS 2010 (boxed)

Thanks everyone. I have ordered the TR2010 discs (boxed) so will be back to re-read and maybe have other questions once it arrives.

(N.B. I only have mobile broadband at the moment so that is one reason to get boxed version, also its nice to get something in the mail).

For others, TRS2010 download is on special at the moment (June 2012) at Auran advertising it as:
"Already own Trainz Simulator 12... Trainz Simulator 2010: Engineers Edition provides you with 10 additional routes, dozens of locos and rolling stock. "

Thanks again.
