Track Stolen from Route...Part 2

Oldrer locos they remove the handles, so unauthorizd persons can not drive them ... newer locos need to have their onboard computer unlocked, so the loco is disabled. Train crews oftentimes have difficulties accessing the drive features ... the common Trainzer can not steal a loco ... if you do, you will become a longtime guest in Kansas ... man, have i ever been tempted. the tourist railroad near me runs an AT&SF 4-6-2 on select weekends, and between the 2 daily trips, they leave it steamed up on a siding. I was there waiting for her next trip and it was all i could do not to sneak off, get in the cab, get grandpa as the fireman (:hehe:) and go for a little joyride. I was like you "okay, grandpa, go throw the switch, and with my limited knowledge of trainz cab mode, and all the videos and books i've read, we should be in El Paso in no time!"

nevermind that she didn't have enough Bunker C oil to get to Baldwin City, let alone El Paso. :o

Does this mean I should give my rusty rail track and 3 spikes back to Queensland Rail before they come looking for it?:hehe:

This happened on the East Broad top last year or a couple years ago. The genius stole a couple pieces from the inactive part of the line (If you recall. The EBT is only operating 5 of it's 30 total miles), and took it to a scrap yard. The scrapyard happened to be Kovalacheck...who owns the railroad.

This incident happened about 80 miles south of me in Taunton, MA. There's a big drug problem down there with crack and heroin. I have a feeling the track was going to be sold for drugs.

Did anyone notice the typo in the article. The thieves were going to sell the track for "scarp" in stead of scrap.

Anyway, these characters should be sent directly to federal prison for tampering with a section of the US transportation system. CSX may switch the tracks for the industrial park, but these tracks I think are owned by the Mass. Bay Transit Authority. (MBTA). They own most of the track and rights of way in the state. This line I think, is also part of the commuter line that will be reopened to Fall River, MA sometime soon. This will come out of Canton Jct. through Stoughton, Easton, then through Taunton on its way to Fall River.

Has anyone tried to steal a train? :hehe:

Well, I have a story for you: in Belgium, two years ago, two men tried to steal train loaded with brand new cars. A witness saw them trying to open the engine's door. When they noticed it they ran like hell! One of them was arrested and the police saw that he was drunk:o

Copper thefts are a big problem here. According to the NMBS there is an average of 2 thefts a day.:( Just last month a man was electrocuted because he tried to steal some wires from a high speed railway!

I find it quite funny when people try to steal live wire for copper.

...Because they always get what they deserve - A good cooking via high voltage. :hehe:

Here in the UK we have a problem with "cable "thieves" stealing signalling cable which causes severe disruption to trains not to mention the inconvienience to passengers and the cost to Network Rail in the form of "delay minutes" which we have to compensate the TOC,s and FOC,s for. Thiis is the first time I,ve heard of "Track Thieves". Unbelievable!

IIRC it was 2 guys and they ripped up quite a bit of track but that doesn't really matter. They cut it into smaller pieces so they could fit it into their truck. It was recovered at the scrap yard but the EBT couldn't reuse any of it. I'm not sure the Kovalchicks owned the yard in question but they're in the scrap business and sent out inquires. I mean what else would these bozos do with old rail that's been sitting out in the weather for the last 55 years besides try to sell it for scrap.

EDIT I think it was back in 2007. It was a half mile of track and the thieves forged a bill of sale and got about US$10000 from the scrap yard for it. Railroad said the damages totaled about US$44000. From some other comments at the time I gather the authorities didn't look on it as a high priority case since the track in question came from an unused rail line. Eventually they caught 1 man out in Nebraska and extradited him to PA where he got 4 yr prision sentence.

Sheriff Jamie Gilchrist told Monaghan: "There has to be a strong financial incentive to stop people committing crimes like these."

In China, they put up with none of this ! A man, and 3 others, were convicted of stealing bicycles from a train, were publicly executed at a soccer game prelude (Marie Antonette style) for theft of railway merchandise.

Soccer ... That must have been a awesome slammin' game, that day, full of excitment ! Go China !

Well, Back in '98 or so when the coal train piled up in Parkville (a little town near me that's bisected by a BNSF railway line) there was a lot of bent, twisted, sawn-to-peices rail left by the company after they replaced the torn up track. they were going to scrap it, and one day, my dad and i were down there when some workers were up throwing it in the back of trucks to haul off, and we asked, "hey, can we have a little bit of that?" to my surprise, they said, "sure!." now i've got about a 1.5-2ft section of rail that's ben torn at a ragged diagonal at one end, torched in a straight line at the other, sitting in my front yard. I love it. It's my favorite peice of railroad memorabilia i have:D
Sawyer, we have two sectiond of track in our front yard, each about 60 or so feet long, complete with wooden ties and real tie plates and spikes on them. to top it off we have a cement whistle post, crossing sign that works with the rotating of a switch, and a wooden train that my dad built on them. The only bad part is that they are 3' guage, but they are still awesome.

Probably the most exciting part of the game given the tedious scores posted in most footy matches. Nice to see a proper disincentive being offered by the state for once.

I worked for a massive American owned mining company for a bit in rural northern Australia,
(until I figured that I didn't fit in beacuse I don't drink weak beer and I can spell), but there was one dude
there who sneakily ripped of a huge amount of copper componenets over an extended period of night shifts.
He did well and no one suspected him at all until he went to cash it in at the local metal recyclers...
in his own name
Erm.. Is it too early to announce my new amazingly photorealistic Taunton track perhaps?
