To Thirdparty or not to thirdparty

gday

In terms of route building, I find that the included assets(if thats what I may call it) in surveyor is sufficient. But Lately, there are lots of free and payware addons I would like to use.

My question, and reason for not just jumping in and using it is quite simple...
How would one backup and distribute a route if it depends on non-standard non-included models/tracks/etc

Whats the general standard procedure you folks use? Do you just distribute a route as is, and let the other guy worry about dependencies on his side or what?

I am keen, so if you could tell me what the procedure is, id love to start digging deeper into payware and freeware extras...

If you use third party content, not much you can do but let the guy downloading it find the content. Some of the better route builders take the time to post when a route is released where to find all the third party content. Makes it a lot easier and I wish more did it.

Don't limit yourself for that reason. There is so much out there and you should take advantage of it if you choose. Build for yourself and your enjoyment. If you decide to share it the least I can do is find the assets after someone took all the time to build it. As far as payware, if someone doesn't have it they can always substitute it. Anyone who would complain should probably just be ignored out right.

Awesome stuff...
And i suppose just backing up the cdp's of the addons and my route is the way to go when it comes to backups? I trust hard drives as far as I can throw my midi tower...

Me personally, when I release crap, I tend to try to find as much of the deps as possible and post them in a thread.

I usually save each CDP as I download it and periodically back up my local (download in 2004) folder. That way I always have the original on a DVD and my "working" folder on an external hard drive. I only use the FTP option on the DLS for that reason and my slow internet connection.

When I build a route, I'll save it as the route name and a date to a CDP as I go. I'm doing the V&O so it will be V&O 070510 for example. Next save will be V&O with that date save. Always have one to go back to and those are saved to an external before deleting from the game so I only have the latest installed.

Thanks Dave and everyone
I think this is it then, have activated my FCT and will now start going nuts :)
Thanks for the backup advice too.

I'd avoid payware in a released route, that is always going to cause you problems. Including a list of third-party content links will help, but still be prepared for a fair few 'Where do I get it...' emails and forum posts...

Andy :)
