A-ha, pfx my friend but I know where in Ulster you can.

Several years back I had a Boys Camp at a building a mile north Donaghadee and we dealt with a butcher in the town and he advertised in the window "Scots Sausages" and sure enough there the Lorne was and he sliced them for us. I think he is still there in the wee street that leads up from the harbour on the left hand side.

The square sausage

I’ve spent several days in Scotland with a relative who lived in Peebles for around 25 years.

Never once did I see a square sausage.

I recall going to Edinburgh. I don’t remember seeing said Scottish delicacy on any of the pub menus either. Mainly tatties and neeps (potato and swede/turnip) to go with the haggis – which was never square. It was usually just a crumbly heap. Nice though!

A friend of mine tells a story about one Glasgow pub which was running a pub quiz. First question, “What the **** are you looking at?”

Not sure I believe him!

I've never seen it in a pub either. Especially not in Edinburgh. Far too common! Hehe.

You would really only find it in a greasy spoon or a butcher's shop.

Well pfx you will have to keep your fingers crossed for M&S! I hope to be back over there after the New year and I am curious about that Donaghadee butcher and if he is still selling them! It's an awkward place to get to. Stayed there 3 times with camps in differnet venues and each time I meant to try and trace where the old railway and station would have been but kept forgetting. Here's another tale about the famous Scots sausages.

Again I led a camp to a wee hamlet in Norfolk - North Pickenham 3 miles from the nice wee town of Swaffam We took a plentiful supply os suare with us to keep the boys happy. There was only 2 buses a day from n. Pickenham and the last around midday (!) so you had to depend on a one-man taxi man who used a 6 seater. He did a roaring trade with our lot. One day on arriving at the camp buildings he came into the kitchen when I was chatting to the cook. The subject of the "squares" came up and he looked puzzled as he had never heard of square sausage before so we showed him the lornes. We gave him some away with him as he was he and his wife were having some friends round for tea. He decided that instead of the intended steaks he would serve them up "Scots sausage" and he did. When we were leaving the night before he dropped some boys off and he gave him what was left of our supply and he went off as happy as you could get!

Should maybe add that we marched on the Sunday to N. Pickenham Church a mile away (we were next Bernard Mathews plant) and it was funny to see the surprised cars who suddenly came across a parade complete with band in the middle of nowhere!
