Tips and Tricks-Surveyor

Yea, probably has - I agree. My problem is time constraints, I wish I could seriously browse and test every tip and trick. I'm trying to balance this hobby - of which I will constantly be improving - with my busy life. I'll do more to research, but when I can't find something readily - here I post.

Thanks for the tip, I'll be searching some more.

Measure_Twice (put that bridge in once)

This was previously in another thread, but I'm guessing it'd benefit more people here. So, yea.

I'll start. :)

Before smoothing terrain, raise all affected spline points by 0.2. After smoothing, lower them all by 0.2 again to remove the 'floating effect'.

IMPORTANT: (see example)

A (50)--------------------B (51.2)------C (51.7)-----------------D (53)

Assuming I'm smoothing B to C.
If B to C is a curve and AB, CD are straightened splines, A and D must be raised to 50.2 and 53.2 respectively or the middle of BC will be floating.

Non-straightened splines are affected by straightened ones not only in terms or curvature but also in elevation.

This takes practice, but a good rule of thumb is always to do such 'smoothing operations' which start and end at straightened splines. This way, the probability of you forgetting which ones you've smoothed/raised is lesser.

Edit--
Likewise, if I'm to continue laying track and now need to smooth to F, the raising should start from C. (see diagram). Then lower CDEF when I'm done.

A (50)--------------------B (51)------C (51.7)-----------------D (53.2)-------E (53.7)-----------------F (55.2)

Cheerio,
Nicholas.

Scale Measurements

Something I found is when using the scale measurements is that the actual lengths of the rulers is much shorter than what they say. So I decided that when I make a route in HO scale that I set the scale measurements to TT scale which yields more accurate HO scale measurements. I hope that this helps anyone encountering the same dilemma.:)

I am putting some of these in WikiBook take a look see what you think ? http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Trainz Don't think i will do screen shots. There may be a lot of one subject so you will have to scroll to fine the one that help you the most. Will try to do some each day!

I was sent to the tutorial referenced below and it has become my bible. I didn't know track had direction. Download & read it. It's clear and concise. Written in people language not techie stuff.

Here's a tutorial for those new to the TRS2004/2006 Surveyor module. It deals with many aspects of getting your new route off to a good start. It covers such things as:

Working with track and switches
Making your turnouts look nice
Controlling train speed through a switch
An introduction to signalling
Working with signals
Installing bridges
An introduction to portals
Case studies in AI train operations

We'll go into considerable detail on these issues, and most of the tutorials are now available as downloadable .pdf files you can print out at home.

You can find the tutorial here: http://trains.0catch.com/tutorial.html

Thanks for the tute I can really use this since I'm relatively new to the game....is the info compatible with trainz version 1.1.1? I was trying to figure out how to place a bridge in a custom layout I'm building but had no luck at all in doing so.

Tip!

Try using stations that come with nameboards attached instead of putting signs on platforms, as otherwise when you go into map view by that station you'll see that the map has marked the signs with whatever you put on it and that name appears everywhere across the station!:hehe: ;)

Hey!!! I just said that on a previous post. Keep the tips coming!!!

Oh... My tip.:hehe:

For Magicland's NYCTA Models.

To change the roll signs on the subway car, you do not need to re-skin the locomotive. All you need to do is when you place the loco on the track, do the following

 1. In the train panel. use the properties tool (?) and click on the car/locomotive.
 2. Scrol all the way down to the bottom untuil you see the wods that say "**undef**". Click on it
 3. Choose the route that you wan't to do. NOTE: The R46 Overhaled has the more "Modern" routes. For older routes, Ues the regular R46.
 4. You are done (Repeat on every train car)

Ok that should do it!

crash

I merged a route with what I had built. My problem is it all deleted except one board which causes trainz to freeze. That was using Trainz 2009 I have tried it in Trainz 2010 and it does the same. Any help would be most appreciated.

Many thanks

Try a 'help' thread. This is just for 'tips and tricks'.

walk in surveyor

There are 2 ways to walk in surveyor

1. lower yourself (camera) to the ground like a birds eye then press and hold control+up arrow. move the mouse around to look around I think.

2. press alt+Y and press the up arrow to walk. again, move the mouse around to look around like moving your flatscreen monitor head ;)

Tips and Tricks

If you lower the ground over a tunnel to the tunnels track height, you can place a static camera in the tunnel. It looks cool when it is facing the tunnels opening as you can see the train coming into the tunnel. When you have the camera placed where you want it and only when you have it where you want it, you can raise the ground over the tunnel and the camera will stay where you put it.

When I try to align something CRITICAL.....:o

and Move the Object ....

IT FLY's ...Out of my View....

and I Have to Drag Back ( Moving My View Perspective ) ...IN...and

try to Align - it again....:(:(:(:(

BE Nice to LOCK VIew.....( HINT---HINT AURAN )

Be sure you're looking straight down when moving an object. From a vertical angle, you will often grab the insertion point which will be offset from that point of view
BE Nice to LOCK VIew.....( HINT---HINT AURAN )
they're called layers, see TS2010
or to be able to have a Snap Right or Left ( HINT---HINT )
...
Already exists, it's part of each object's config file.

I can suggest that you start a new thread for the reasons given previously, please. Best of luck :)

One Block at a Time

In Trainz 2009 it is much easier to build your route block by block. It is also much more realistic, if you aren't going to use more blocks than you need to, if you put hills round the edges of the terrain blocks. :D. Hope these help.

hights local point

When working in a map with elevation, especially from DEM data which can produce subtle elevation differences, you often need to find the highest point of land. Not always obvious if there are several high areas and the difference is not very great.
Just add water and slowly raise it until only one bit of land is left sticking out. That is the highest point in the local area.
