Tip to Route builders

Koondawg

Always a WIP
I know most of you know to SAVE often...this is just a reminder.

I just spent 2 hours working on a route without saving...you know I get involved and things are looking great and to celebrate I go to get a brewskie and walla I come back and my computer chose to reboot....
NO I didn't save my work in this time....so 2 hours work down the drain...I know I should have saved but I get involved and forget to hit the esc key ( in surveyer)...BUT BY ALL priorities SAVE often.....Im gonna limit my time from now on to 15 mins before from now on and saving....
yes im kicking myself in the ars...I just wanted to share my private humiliation and remind everyone....SAVE...SAVE...SAVE :'(

Been there, done that. I feel for you as I've been there myself. I too get involved and before I know it, a couple of hours have gone by. You never know when that little gremlin is going to pop up his little head and destroy your day. Save often.

ONLY two hours? (try six to nine hours on autocad, max, blender, et al, or a word proccessor); like leafer says.

i seem to remember a cartoon on some sort of lab corkboard, that had moses carving an 11th commandment that said "though shalt make backups".

life in the computer age. happens to us all.

Yep! Been there, done that!

The main culprit of the reboot is them pesky idiots at Microsoft who decide to update Windows. If you're not at your computer at the time to tell it to reboot later, it goes into Automatic Reboot!

Of course, if you're working in Surveyor at the time, you don't see the little prompt asking you if you want to restart now so the first you know of this update is watching your system shutting down before your eyes!

I've disabled Automatic Updates but now get a "nag box" warning that Automatic Updates are disabled every time I start up or reboot my system!

Whilst I remember computers before Windows ( my first ever Windows version was 1.3 and I thought it fantastic), there is no doubt Bill Gates simplified operating really well. However, Windows XP and now Vista seem to want to take control of the pc and I sometimes wonder what Microsoft's real motives are!

The irony is that I have TC3 Autosave set to 10 minutes (as I did with TRS2006) and it doesn't save.So 2 days ago I had a Fatal Error and watched 2 hours work evaporate...:(

I have autosave set at 20 min intervals. It can be a PITA when it kicks in as you're trying to carry out a tricky procedure, but it's better than losing an hours work in a crash.

I also make a point of manually saving when:
1. Moving to another part of the map with MiniMap or Find Object - I find this is when 99% of crashes occur.
2. After copying and pasting large amounts of terrain texture/forests, as this is very memory intensive not to mention mind numbing work that you don't really want to repeat.
3. Before exiting - easy to forget!

One tip worth adding is that if you change a route while working in a session, the programme has a habit of then knocking out all the other sessions when you return to the menu. Don't make changes to the route when editing a session!
