Thoughts on the DLS problems and the effects on the end user

Agreed. I have SP1 for beta testing others' routes but otherwise I'm sitting pretty on 49922.
Only inconvenience was not being able to use the DLS this weekend but otherwise my Trainz was chugging along just fine.

DRM is ok if it does not pose to the user an inconvenience; you can do all the checking you want, but you better not bother me when I want to play.

I got caught with a 4000+ asset, 1 hour long validation last night I wasn't happy about. I thought if the Planet Auran page came up then I was OK, but that shot that theory out of the water.

Shane, does your Internet checking program check the DRM server? If so, I'm going to start running that before I start Trainz. If I see that the DRM server is down, I'm turning off my internet. That seems to stem the validation process.

Just used my network monitoring stuff on 49922 and then 61388 with and without DLC

Just for a basic start launcher then Content Manager

49922 connects with 174.121.103.202 Auran.com

61388 both with and without DLC connects with
174.121.103.202 Auran.com
And very briefly with
108.168.130.242 itrainz.auran.com this I am presuming is the DRM server.

I would suggest that if this is so, a simple ping 108.168.130.242 would check it's working.

Thank you for investigating this. I will definitely do this in the future.

For Shane: Maybe you can include this server in your IP status check.

Here is my confirmation of the 108.168.130.242 server:

C:\Users\John\Desktop\Desktop Apps>nslookup itrainz.auran

End of Test

I did notice a very large roundtrip time on the ITrainz server though during the latest test.

When did the test start? Yesterday? :)

That is wicked. No wonder some people are still having problems.

Here's the results of my ping to the same IP address:

Not quite as bad since the server is about 2800 miles from me, or a wee bit closer than you are.

John

That would explain things a bit. Perhaps I should get users that are still affected to run their own ping test on that server and see what the results are like.

Shane

P.S. Have you also got version 2.1 of my PC Information Application?

EDIT: I've just run another test and the figures for the ITrainz server are now in the ~130ms range.

I don't have the latest. I'll go download it now.

That's a good idea. This would confirm whether it's worth it for them to try to connect.

John

I did notice when the servers were off again earlier, I was able to ping the IP's but not the addresses.

I have v2.1 of the utility but it does not include:

Connection Test: N3V ITrainz/Multiplayer server.

Edit - I have just re-downloaded v2.1 from your page and it does now have the extra test.

My test shows:

Packet 1: RECEIVED from 108.168.130.242 (108.168.130.242-static.reverse.softlayer.com) - Roundtrip time:124

It should do. Let me check my version (which I downloaded from the site not long ago).

Shane

EDIT: Try re-downloading the application, as mine definitely contains that test.

I did notice your edit after I replied - looks like your figures are similar to mine (the second test I did that is). Looks like it's also using one of the Softlayer reverse addresses as well.

Here's my ping test:

Let me download Shane's utility again and try that. Does all this mean the server is up again and Trainz will re-validate/re-enable the assets it took away?

Here we go...

Code:
Connection Test: N3V ITrainz/Multiplayer server

I'm going to start up CM 3.7 and see what happens. I can always go to dinner if it's going to validate for a while! :p

Well, no validations. I guess it's working because I can see and place the Nickel Plate Locos and caboose in Surveyor along with the CNJ Blue Comet Locos. I believe those are N3Vs payware, right?

Edit: Did the same with the Coronation Scot. Success!
