The Other Guys

Hello,

A long time ago, I bought MSTS, my first train simulator, played with it for a while then tried to build my own route and it was nearly impossible to do.

Then, I came across Trainz and have stayed with that ever since. I started out with "Trainz", under a different name and all that so, it doesn't show up on my time line. Nevertheless, I got to 2009 and thought it absolutely sucked! Everything was wrong with it! Then, I happened across 2010 and decided to give it a try. I'm very happy with this version. I'm mainly into content creation and my own routes. I use gmax, Belnder and 3D Canvas, all three having characteristics that make them ideal for creating certain models.

A couple of years ago I bought Rail Simulator, tried to make content for it but it went nowhere. Nice graphics but I didn't like the idea of having to keep the CD in the drive to keep the game running. I haven't played with that in a very long time. It is collecting dust, somewhere in my closet. They are still trying to sell me the latest version, Railworks--I'm not interested.

Now you have Open Rails. I looked into that and found the graphics sorely lacking, though I suspect that will improve with time. What is their mission?

So, for me, 2010 is the best product on the market. Not only can you use much larger texture maps, I like the 5 meter grid, which is much closer to the real width of a single track rail bed.

I think that Trainzers should investigate other products, just to see how they compare. I vote for 2010!

Such is my verbal contribution.

Cheers,

srude

Hey srude, nice to see another 3D Canvas user out there! I think it's under-rated as a tool for Trainz content creation. Personally, I found it much easier to use than GMAX. If you don't mind me asking, which verson are you currently using? I just upgraded to V8.2 build 1506. I know there's a newer build out there, but I'm a little reluctant to upgrade further as this seems to be the "release version" and it works great for me thus far.

I've also recently ordered Trainz 2010 after years of using 2004/06. I'm looking forward to trying it out. If it doesn't suit me, then I'll simply return to 06, which has always worked well for my needs.

I believe the basic mission of Open Rails is to create a new simulator that is capable of running MSTS routes. This may be why you found the graphics lacking. Personally, although I've not tried it yet, the screenshots do look to improve the apperance of MSTS (I've seen a few videos with dynamic shadows etc that look pretty good) and from what I've heard the frame rates are much improved over MSTS. Of course, it's far from finished yet, but I think it's neat that OR is an entirely free product.

For RailSimulator.
If you install the Mk1 and Mk2 patches along with the free developer pack, you can launch and run it from the Railsimulator editor.exe and you don't need the disc in the drive. Just a heads up to save your disc.

Disclaimer: Haven't had it loaded in a while so the exact names may not be the same.
