The New Is Here So What is Next?

You know this is ridiculous. Boo hoo. I have had quite a few problems with TANE, things not working, things not received and things I did not understand. I got help from tech support everytime and in a short period of time. When I have a problem I am not arrogant about it. I am not a so called fanboy nor do I worship at the temple of trainz. Just a guy who likes trains. I have all the sims. And they all have a group of people who think they should be at the top of list for suggestions and problems they have and expect immediate action. If it does not happen the way the expect, then the crying starts. "Tech support does not care, they just want our money. This game sucks. I am going to go back to trainsim XXX." Then they start comparing this company to another company that does things different with a different sim. Boo hoo.

That's well said, sir, and let me add ... I don't have enough fingers and toes to count how many times I've seen Tony (N3V CEO) in these forums day in, day out helping and answering questions himself ... Go to the EA forums, and good luck with that!

i have been on this forum in one guise or another since june 2001 (including the old forum). I have every major version of Trainz.

We have only your word for that since you have no registered version against your name and the above quote is from only your 5th post.

Those in the favoured cannot do anything wrong group. Then there are the rest of us that have been pumping money into Auran\N3V for over 15 years.

Broad stroke generalisations with nothing to back them up are always too easy to make. If you are in the latter group and are dissatisfied with what you have got or have received then why are you still hanging around after, allegedly, 15 years? If you have kept that much angst going for so long then it is time to move on to another hobby.

I have been using Trainz for as long as is shown on my timeline. I have had problems, posted questions and issues on these forums, raised help desk tickets, put in bug reports. I have had responses from Tony or other members of the crew. Not all of my questions or problems have been resolved but I always move on. Which group does that put me in?

...

Also, the $500 comment is based on the pay to play club that still has their of forum for some reason.

Don't lose any sleep over it. It's practically dormant and most of us have moved on. Yes, I paid to be a Pioneer Council member, plus the other benefits, and don't regret a dollar of it. Not because I wanted to be a member as such but I was prepared to put my money where I thought it could do some good.

Hi everybody.
I believe that many would accept that the management of N3V are very accessible. Their frequent presence on this forum demonstrates a realization that Trainz is a niche market and therefore great care of its customer base is required. However, the opening poster asked the question of what could be expected NEXT from the company in regards to this hobby.

The foregoing is a question I believe that not only faces N3V but also the whole PC and console gaming industry. Many of us on this forum came to gaming by way of the PC in an era when that media was the only way of gaming as no other method was available. However, in recent years the above has very much changed with mobile gaming coming to the fore on numerous platforms. Smartphones and tablets have also taken over the many other tasks that was the domain of the household PC.

In the above, many younger people never find a need to require the use of a PC or even a laptop as all can be carried out on their phones and tablets. The foregoing means that far fewer people get to experience high end PC gaming as mobile gaming is what is at hand instantly, wherever they are and at any time of the day.

Two thousand and sixteen was the year that the revenue derived from mobile gaming exceeded that of both PC and console gaming for the first time worldwide. Therefore the challenge for all involved in both PC and console gaming is how to bring more of the people who enjoy mobile gaming through to the high end PC platform. The foregoing is especially important to the Trainz franchise as that is a niche market within the high end PC gaming market and therefore more susceptible to changes in that market.

N3V does it would seem have a good presence on the Apple IPad and IPhone platforms. How many of those that first experience Trainz on that platform go on to the purchase of a PC or laptop to further that experience we do not know. Perhaps more importantly we also do not know if N3V would want them to make that change.

N3V have little or virtually no presence on the Android platform at the present time and it is on that platform that nine out of every ten mobile devices are sold. Therefore no one using a Android device can experience just what enjoyment Trainz can give as the very dated Android app will not even run on the latest mobile phones and tablets.

In the above it may well be that forum members reading this posting may feel that what happens on mobile platforms does not concern them as they are a one hundred percent PC gamer. However, if the future of Trainz and this hobby is to be assured, getting people to make the move from mobile to PC gaming is paramount for the long term future of this hobby.

So what is to be NEXT.

Chatting, reading false planted stories and playing a game really do not need a PC which usually costs more than a phone or tablet. However, complex tasks such as authoring a research paper, or just diggin for info to answer a friend, is awkward on phones and tablets. A spreadsheet is a real pain and even common apps such as mail and texting are more function restricted than their PC counterparts. Having evolved from fixing Univac-I's to the phone in my pocket I appreciate the need categories for the PC versus portable gear. However, I would never attempt to fly and airplane or drive a train on a tiny screen. Even my 27" LCD is not big enough at times.

I hope that the rules and addons DO get organized. That would improve the TANE product for all ranges of customers.

I have no doubt about that but I have to ask the question "What type of gaming?" I see people, mainly commuters and others needing to occupy their time, playing arcade style games on their mobiles such as Tetris, Candy Crush. etc. I see various "Hack and Slash" and warfare epics being heavily advertised on TV as "free" mobile platform games - which means that somewhere along the line you pay (extra weapons, abilities, food to feed the cute critters, etc).

As for the cross-over, from mobile to desktop, I have my doubts. It all seems to be going the other way.

I agree. Using Excel, Word or even filling in a web form on my mobile is a real pain compared to the desktop. Even using this forum on my mobile sometimes presents problems due to the relative sizes of my screen and fingers - hitting the icon that takes you to the last post in a thread from the forum main menu for example (zooming in does not help). I would hate to attempt to use Driver on my mobile, much less Surveyor. When the image can be beamed directly from my mobile device onto the back of my retina and the software responds to eye movements (or better still, thought control) then I may be interested.

It is true that the CPUs used in some tablets and phones are getting as advanced as those in many desktops and we will no doubt see more improvements - at least until we run out of Iridium, the rare earth mineral that makes touch screens work - 10 years (or is it less) supply left?

"Next" would actually be a period of stability with no major changes to the core programme (other than bug fixes or essential patches) so those of us engaged on route projects can proceed in the knowledge that our work is not going to be obsolete (or contain assets which no longer work), at the next bi-annual re-release.

And while I respect Bill's view about mobile gaming, as usual I beg to disagree and IMHO no substitute for a PC with keyboard and mouse when building a route. I doubt there's many 3D modelling or paint packages which work on an Android tablet, either. I did buy Trainz for Android back in the summer and it was the most singularly awful implementation of the software. Routes and train assets that hark back to the 2002 CE area, sluggish (the Android operating system is useless - we have a large screen TV which incorporates it in the firmware and is very unreliable) plus touch screen doesn't really suit train sims either for operating or building.

They will have to prise the keyboard and mouse enabled PC with large monitor, from my cold dead hands...

Well put Vern and I agree with you all the way. Having progressed through all the versions of Trainz and had to modify all the way to get the newer version to run properly then I decided a while ago that there would be no "next" for me. Tane will do what I need.

Hi everybody.
Apologies to those who have commented on my on previous page for this rather short responce, but there is no need to use mobile small screens or keyboards in these times. All what is produced on a tablet or smartphone screen can be cast to a large screen via broadband. Also, there is no need to use that devices keyboard as voice recognition on the latest android or Apple devices is practically faultless.

The above is what all modern offices with good broadband use these days to produce their output and it is what is being used to produce this posting. Tablets and smartphones can be used for ALL TASKS, therefore the younger generation have no need to purchase a PC and therefore do all their gaming on those devices. The Paramount question for the high end PC community is how to bring those on the mobile gaming platform forward to high end PC gaming.

I will post to greater extent later, but we are exceptionally busy in the office and I have just finished

"I agree that T:ANE is not complete yet, it is an ongoing development as far as I understand but..."

Glad I didn't hold my breath back when it was first announced. :hehe:
