Chasing Extra 4314 North (Caution: Large Images
OK, here's my first group of good pictures now that I have figured out a good setup and got some better looking engines & cars. Also keep in mind the layout is still in the "bare-bones" stage.
Starting out at the South end of Ottawa Siding on a warm July evening, we see a clear indication for a northbound. These are the JointedRail beta CPLs that several have recommended, and I plan on adding more of these, but I'm still playing around with them as of now...
The northbound arrives with a solo Chessie GP40-2 on point, and knocks down the signal. He had a short train, so we figured we'd stick around for the caboose...
It was a nice evening, and by the sound of the scanner, there wasn't much other traffic around. So, we followed the extra north in toward Deshler. Our first stop was in downtown Leipsic, where we watched the train roll north, white classification lights beaming, toward the N&W crossing at RO Tower.
Next was Belmore, a little hamlet between Leipsic and Deshler, which houses a set of wig-wags...
It was a close race, but we made it to the south end of Deshler sidings in time to watch him roll under the three track signal bridge.
Then, we arrived in Deshler, "The Crossroads of the B&O". Deshler was and still is today an all B&O town, and even in 2014, the CPLs still flourish on the CSX Toledo Subdivision. The depot and tower are still there too. Extra 4314 north rolls under the CPL bridges at the Deshler reservoir, once a water stop back in the steam days, and rolls north toward downtown and the B&O Chicago Division diamonds. The southwest connection in photo 4 veers to the west headed for Chicago, while the southeast connection in photo 6 heads east toward Willard, OH. We stuck around to watch the train clatter over the diamonds at DR Tower, and took one more photo of the rear of the train heading north toward Toledo, slowly receding into the night...
