The 2010 Route Building Competition is Underway! Enter Here.

Here's a few comments then I'll do some answers:

In response to deeelare. In an earlier post I said I was creating a web site and when that was finished I'll start a new thread. In the meantime, vent your frustrations (not anger or sarcasm) here. I worked on the site overnight and submitted it to the committee for approval. I haven't heard from them yet because I'm in a different time zone. I'm now filling in the finer details but the site will be finished in the couple of days as promised. Then and only then, I'll open a new thread, and we can all be happy little Vegemites!

------------

In response to Storknest and Jadebullet. It may not answer your concerns but it's the best I can offer at present.

With a just over three months to build the route, it's possible that some competitors will not complete theirs on time. Thus they would be unsuitable for the DLS. Also, it seems to me that building is one thing and getting things fine-tuned for DLS approval is another.

Under the circumstances, having the judges, or the community vote on the routes by actually running them would be almost impossible. Trainz has far too many incompatible versions with far too many incompatible assets to make it viable. I love the idea, but what a nightmare it would be.

------------------------

To everyone. For a competition to take place there must be competitors, and all competitors must know what the goals and objectives are. That's what the web site is all about. After you read the contents, everyone will be on a level playing field.

Once the site is opened and you register, you will be told where the first station will be (literally speaking). That means you can start before the 15th if you want to, but if we don't get a minimum of ten (10) competitors, the competition will be null and void and your work will be in vain. We can't ask sponsors to offer prizes if only one person enters, so as a sponsor, ten is an arbertory figure I came up with.

Regarding progress. As can be seen by the comments passed about the first competition in this series, silence is not golden. People want to see what's going on and that's fair enough. Maybe all the competitors lost interest and even the judges don't know. Rightly or wrongly, I've decided to put the competitors on notice. We can't charge an entry fee, so the only way to ensure that people keep slogging away is to offer an incentive. Our incentive requires the competitors to submit weekly progress reports by way of a screenshot which will generate bonus points to their final score. Those bonus points are enough to win or lose, so any competitor who fails to submit a screenshot is guaranteed not to win.

The content of the weekly screenshots won't be judged, so nobody will be under pressure to be at a certain point by a certain time. This will help someone who is stuck on a particular aspect of the project.

In response to titaniclover. Thanks for your comments. It's up to 8 baseboards (Two to Eight). Provided tou have a port (small or large) with animated or non- animated activity (cranes, people, cargo, cargo sheds etc) and provided my suggestion of a mainline/branchline hub is generally accepted, what goes on the remainder of your baseboads is up to you. One person has suggested a heavy industrial scene, another a city scene. The branchline doesn't have to be the focal point. In fact it can go 200 metres from the mainline to the port if you wish. Read the Theme, the Rules and the Guidelines for suggstions. The web site contains a lot of material.

Don't get bogged down here. The port can be a river or lake port on the top of a mountain serviced by 2 foot gauge trains carting produce and/or passengers from the mainline hub. It's your imagination that will be judged, not mine.

-------------------

In response to LGBMATT and already answered by IC. By all means make it a family affair but only one person can register and your group will be seen by the committee and judges as one competitor.

-------------------

Great to see a postive approach developing girls and guys.

Obviously there are a few things that need addressed.

We are holding tight to the set rules, the 15th and only 8 baseboards.
We started the thread early as a heads up and so we could get entries.
We will not be accepting entries after January 1st.

No, it is not a screenshot competition.

Deepest Regrets for what was previously here.

As for the others,
Bare with us, remember that the contest does not start until the 15th and that we are doing our very best.

Thank you,
Woody

I am confused. The first post in this thread says the contest starts on the 15th of Dec and end in April of 2010. This post says that no entries after Jan 1st 2010. If no entries are accepted after 1-1-2010, why is the contest ending in April. Personally, I would like to see someone post the rules and then lock the thread to get rid of all the BULL. Can't you people read? The first post says that any version of trainz can be used and the second post ask what versions can be used.

Hey skidmark, me old mate! Can't you read either?:) I've made two significant posts in the past 24 hours answering every one of your concerns. For the sake of repeating myself for the third time, please read my posts, use this thread to vent frustrations, not anger, and please wait until the rules are published within the next 48 hours. I have spent the better part of 24 hours in the past 24 hours trying to get this thread into order and create a new web site that contains more than everything you will need to know. I'm also trying to close a few gaps, one of which you mentioned so I will speak to it.

As administrator, I have suggested that the closing date for the competition will be the 15th December, not January 1st (which I actually missed). The date is significant for two reasons:

1. It's the (new) closing date for registrations which will NOT be a "me too" post in the forums, that I can assure you. People must register and get a password to the gallery when they must deposit their screenshots.
2. If we don't get 10 competitors by the 15th, then the party is over! We owe this to our sponsors who have offered prizes.

We may accept late starters if someone drops out, but after january 1 they wouldn't have much of a chance to catch up. Hopefully that won't be the case.

I'm working my butt off to get this show on the road for the folks who started it. Please keep in mind that Woody who is a student, also had a bereavement in his family that knocked him around quite a bit. Not everyone was born with the same thick hide as me, so I do understand how things have managed to get out of hand a little. I'm putting this thing back on the rails and that's where it will end up, one way or another. If it doesn't work this time, at least we can all stand tall and say we gave it our best shot.

Regards,

John

No I can't read either. I started at the top and when I got down to that post, I was so confused, I just stopped right there and made that post.

Now I am beginning to understand. If I would like to enter, I have to put my name in the hat before Dec 15th and then I have until April to complete the route. Thanks for clearing that up. Sorry I got confused so early in the thread.

I will think about entering and let you know.

Ryan (and others). If you read my latest post (#43) you will see that waving hands will not signify an expression of interest. A new web site is about to be launched and it's there where you will have to register. This thread will close in a day or two and I personally will never read it again. Your name along with all other prospective starters will be lost forever.

I realise the thread does ask you to sign up, but it also asks people not to post if they don't intend to. Just read the waffle hear and you'll see why I can't take anything for gospel.

I'm sorry, but I have absolutely no faith in people volunteering in forum posts. It's too easy and too open to trolls, tire kickers and game players.

The site is almost done, and I will make an announcement along with a working URL in a day or so.

I'd love to see you sign up, but you'll just have to wait a little longer and read the rules first.

regards

John

John, I would really like to get into this competition but I have this problem.

My first exposure to Trainz was with TS2009. I was very ignorant of the way trainz software worked so didn't understand the "Native" and "compatible" concept. I got me a "first class ticket" and started downloading. Before I knew it, my machine was loaded with tons of TS2004 stuff that doesn't work good in compatible mode much less in "Native". I kept my program in the compatible mode (again, ignorant) and started building. Then I learned that my routes looked like crap in Native mode and I could not upload them to the DLS. I did manage to get a route up the Pro Trainz routes and started on a second route before coming to understand the difference between "Native" and "compatible". I had about 8 boards done on the second route and just put it in the trash. I am totally disgusted with the way trainz software works. I wish there was a way to seperate the assets that work with "compatible" and those that work with "native".

Anyhow, being as disgusted as I am, There is just no way I can get motivated to start another route. I am going on a 7 day cruise in the couple of weeks. Maybe that will clear my mind and I can find some tiny bit of motivation. I have started tinkering with Railworks. The building part looks a lot more complicated but I am so disgusted with Trainz right now, I don't really care.

Skidmark, I think there are people out there working on that, but nothing will happen until 2010 is released. I wish you luck with Railworks. I think it looks fantastic, but from what I've heard it's harder than MSTS to build routes for.

Maybe the 7 day cruise will allow you to sort things out.

Keep in mind that the routes are not being judged for performance.

BTW, I PM'd you on a completely different matter a few days back. Can you please PM me with a reply. It's urgent.

Have a think about it, but I do need everyone signed up by the 15th.

UPDATE

A very short update on progress:

The web site is almost finished. Another day and a bit should do it I hope. I've received permission to use the banner graphics and I've installed and tested the registration form. Tomorrow I'll tidy up the rules and get the committee to check everything before putting it online. As soon as that happens, this thread will be closed.

There aren't many prizes on offer yet because one would-be sponsor hasn't answered my email. So far we have a one year FCT for first and a 6 month FCT for second. Anyone else interested in offering prizes can PM me or wait for the web site to go on line.
