Terrain / DEM maps in 2010...

Hi...

I`ve had to abort my latest effort due to a number of reasons:

a) Used S&C content - wouldn`t be able to release it to the DLS.
B) Not happy with my terrain building skills (or lack of).... used the spline / smooth method.

So I was wondering if there are any `Terrain only` maps out there that can be used with TS2010 ? I managed to get hold of `Terrain #1` by fishlipsatwork from the DLS, but for some reason there was nothing in surveyor when I loaded it (yes, I got the Hog files) !
I suppose what I really need is a `DEM map` of suitable ground, but I`ve had a look at previous threads on the subject and it just went straight over my head !!

(Cannot ask Santa for help as he`s sending us some new Class 27`s :udrool: )

Any Ideas folks ?

If you have the HOG textures and they are committed there is no reason why any HOG-DEM route should not appear in Surveyor...

It's possible

It is possible, but unlikely, for an error to prevent a terrain map from showing up. If there is an illegal tag in the config file, for example, this would prevent the map from appearing in Surveyor. This happened to me when installing a map from fishlipsatwork that I had used in TRS2006 to TS2010. But since there is so little to terrain maps, e.g., no dependencies, the fix was simple. Just put it in CM and "view errors and warnings," then do the repair.

There are bushels of terrain maps on the dls but the bulk of them were for very early versions of Trainz. Suggest you try your searches with all boxes from the top to the bottom, including Pre-SP3, checked. You already found fishlipsatwork. Try a username search for smooz as well.

G'day Chairman,

As Dermmy has indicated, the reason you are not seeing any textures on your terrain (the fishlipsatwork DEM maps provide basic TIGER data provided by the so-called HOG textures), is that you DO NOT have the HOG textures installed on your machine. To obtain the textures on the terrain as fishlips intended, please download and install the following file..

http://www.storage.victrainz.com.au/Jerkers_DEM_maps/HOG_Texture_Set.cdp

...and the textures will appear as if by magic the next time you open the route...

"I managed to get hold of `Terrain #1` by fishlipsatwork from the DLS, but for some reason there was nothing in surveyor when I loaded it (yes, I got the Hog files) ! [Emphasis added]"

The two emphasized phrases seem repugnant to each other since you can't load a file if it doesn't appear in Surveyor, but I think he means he's got HOG and that his problem is not that the TIGERs are missing but that the map does not appear in Surveyor at all.

Bernie

Aha - semantics! You are assuming the 'it' that was loaded was Surveyor, I was assuming the 'it' was the map. ie you assume the OP has the map missing when the Surveyor menu is loaded, I was assuming the map loaded but showed 'nothing'.

Assuming you are correct and Jerker and I are wrong there there are only two possibilities I can think of:

(a) the route has a config error (as previously suggested) in which case it shows an error in CM, if the OP can post the error all will be fixed...

(b) the OP has 'Favorites' selected in Surveyor in which case the little gold star at the top of the route menu needs toggled.

Andy

English sure can be hard. I wonder how many shooting wars have started because of something like this. Either way, I think both possibilities are covered so the OP has his answers.

Sorry my sentence construction was not up to the required standard !

Anyway, I downloaded Bethlehem Branch by fishlipsatwork.... and had a look in surveyor, to say I was shocked at the size is an understatement ! I was expecting something around the 2000 board size... not a monster 10x that (at least !).

I`m finding it quite overwhelming at the moment, maybe there is something not quite as large out there.

Thankyou for the `help`

chairman

Most DEM routes are big - they set out to reproduce a fair sized chunk of a real railroad.

You don't need to use the entire DEM though, you can find a bit you like and delete all the boards around it to be left with a manageable bit of railroad still based on a true-to-life landscape.

I have several seriously big 'blank' DEM routes at checkrail (click my sig) but almost all of the biggies contain several worth-while smaller routes...

On the sentence structure thing i wouldn't lose any sleep LOL

Andy :)
