Tehachapi Depot Burns Down

Yea and now it turns out that some that were involved were 30 years old. How stupid can "adults" people get? At least no one got hurt or killed in the deal, and the historic buildings across the street were saved.
One good aspect that will come out of this is it will now be rebuilt out of new material through out and a cement slab foundation will be poured for the new depot to set on rather than the wood pillars that the original was setting on, which will make it safer from earth quakes and such, so some good will come from the disaster.

Rebuilding the Tehachapi Depot

They are getting to work rebuilding the Tehachapi Depot. Its supposed to be finished by the end of Oct. 09.

I would probably bet this building goes back to the steam era and it is sad to see this piece of railroading history burn down to the ground like that!

Maybe next time someone wants to use fireworks they ought to think twice and stay away from the railroad for that matter!:n:

Its being rebuilt to the exact design of the original, siding roofing and all albeit new construction standards and codes of course. It will be better in the long run since the original was getting pretty run down.
The man you see in the picture with the white hard hat is the structural engineer. I talked to him for awhile about the project, and he confirmed the exact design concept.
The trial for the perps has been postponed three times now due to the trial lawyer working cases in LA. The trial is scheduled for the 28th of this month and the judge is quite peeved about what's been going on.
Here's the latest news about it.

Well they are going to get what they deserve for vandalizing railroad property and other things that don't belong to them and I hope that trial happens soon after that depot is rebuilt because what the perpetrators did was sickening and should be locked up for their heinous act!

this incident reminds me of a similiar incident that damaged two steam engines that were in the engine house and one of them was H&BTM #38 who's cab was lined with wood and is a baldwin 2-8-0 consolidation and as for the perpetrators who commited the arson I don't know if they were caught or not but it could have been worse! By the way that incident happened in I think Pennsylvannia on the former knoxville & kane RR.the other engine was a chinese 2-8-2 which is a sy-class that faired much better than the old #38 and I think it is only a matter of time before the police finds the people of person responsible for vandalizing railroad property.

there was a kid recently somewhere, cant remember where, but he was tired of the large Santa Fe locomotive (either a 4-8-4 or a 2-10-4) in a park near him, so he tried to burn it down.....some how failing to realize, it was a steel locomotive.
