System hangs when painting ground

That is possible - just in case sniper297 is not sure how to do a disk check, here is the info:

1.Double-click on My Computer.
2.Right-click your hard drive icon, then click Properties.
3.Click Tools.
4.Click Check Now.
5.Click in the 2 boxes at the top to place ticks in them, then click Start.
6. When prompted, click Yes.
7.Restart your computer: the disk check will happen automatically.

Unfortunately, as I have already said, the service pack issue may hamper Trainz in other areas.

Yeah, Zec suggested that on the helpdesk. Ran the disk check this morning, no change. While that was running I spent an hour on my son's computer painting like crazy trying to duplicate the glitch, results: one sprained wrist and one warm mouse. Haven't been able to run the RAM test yet since all the ones I've found so far require a boot disk, and for some reason either I'm not burning the CDs correctly or this Dell won't boot from a CD. If I boot into safe mode command prompt only, I can do CD D:\ and CD E:\ and do a DIR, see the windiag.iso or the memtest.bin, don't see a way to execute the commands tho. I'll keep hunting, but since what I got here is two 1gb sticks of Crucial RAM less than six months old it's unlikely there's anything wrong with those.

Check your boot settings. F12 or F10 to go into setup, or CTRL+ one of those function keys, I can't remember which, and choose boot device order, and choose CD before hard drive. You might also have to enable boot from CD too.

Check around for memtest86. This I found to be a very intensive memory test.

Crucial memory is good, and their replacement warranty is excellent. I have had one of their memory sticks croak on me before. They were very nice to deal with, and I had a replacement in my hands in a very short time.

Thank you for your update on this. Good luck.

John
