I am at the point of giving up surveyor will not save? at the final prompt to save it all crashes. With the following fatal error message.
src\jet\boot\..\..\..\src\jet\kernel\standard\file\.cpp
line2631
class file
reason read next()failed to read block
version jet vRRRRR.RRbuild1234.5QQQQQ
no call stack available

What to do now this is the 5th route I have done and i get to a point and the world ends. Arghhhhhh.:'(:'(:'(

Sounds like a possible HDD problem, have a read of the 'Failed to Read Block?' thread for possible solutions, including how to do a disk check.

If the solutions given do not fix the problem, reply to this post.

Did a disc check and defrag, still no go. same error message. Put something on glagow to selkirk route saved ok. so its my route thats the problem. its getting pretty big. hardware is not a problem as mother board/ram/graphic card all new and up to date. i have still to try a new route start and save thats my next attempt. also i get the message at start that some of my content has not been committed. I used to know how to do that have to read the book again. its still ARGGGG:'(:'(:'(:'(

Might be worth doing a database repair (if using TS2009 or above) or deleting assets.tdx (in the trainz folder) and assets.bku (this will be in a folder called cache in the trainz folder) if you are using TRS2006.

One thing I do need to check is whether a deep disk check was done or just a basic one (if you are not certain how to do a deep disk check, have a read of my post and a couple of other posts in the thread mentioned above.

Can I check that a deep disk check was made?

If so, you may need to do a database repair (for instructions, I will need to know your Trainz version).

Failing that, there may be other possibilities. Open one of the built-in routes, add a few buildings, then save the route under a new name (see if the fatal appears then) - if it does, then the problem is related to custom routes (and a possible trainz asset database problem)

OK> tried to start a new route all saves ok what the???? Spent weeks on the last route hope this not a recurring problem and trainz as an upper limit on size of your route before melt down. all my route at present as no consists as i like to get to a almost finished before adding consists also it loads faster.:'(:'(:'(:'( I am losing count on the number of routes i have had and lost.

Hello Sean lee;
I understand your frustration.
Can I assume that when you did the disk check, you ran it with the option to repair bad blocks ticked?

Check the event viewer in Windows.
Go to Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Event viewer.
Check the System, and the Apps event listings. Look for disk errors or warnings.

You are not saving to a removable drive, are you? USB drives tend to be slow, and sometimes have failures on delayed write.

Which version of TS are you running?

Have you also run a memory check? A bad byte (or even just one bit) of memory can cause the same problem as a bad block on the HDD, since data is being transferred between memory and HDD, and there is a checksum that is calculated and written to the hdd during save.

Also, check what other programs are running when you are running TS. If you have any disk utilities, such as the automatic features in Diskeeper running at the time of the save, this could be the cause of the problem.

Also, try running the extensive database repair in CM.

To commit assets in CM, just go to the "Open for Edit" tab, select all of the assets, and do Ctl-M (control key and the M key simultaneously). This will commit all the assets selected. They will disappear from the Open for Edit listing after commit.

I guess you've got enough things to check. Let us know what you find.

I know what you mean - I've had problems with fatal errors as well previously.

It seems that Trainz is very fickle on how routes are saved - might be a problem with memory or something similar. (sorry about the double-posting then, my web browser is playing up)

Best advice I can give you is to save frequently (if it does fatal, at least it will have saved the vast majority of it). If you are using TRS2006 SP1, look in the Options box in the Launcher, and turn on the autosave option (Advanced tab)

been at event viewer, quite a FEW ERRORS \DEVICE\HARDDISK1\D HAS A BAD BLOCK. IS THE MESSAGE where from here running trs2006 sp1:'(:'(:'(:'(:'(
