Support for the beginner at the Forum

Six years ago I bought TRS 2006, Trainz Classics, and Trainz all at once . The graphic superiority over Microsoft's Train Sim was evident and the scenery complexity was even better. I found the opposite was true about the PDF Manual and online support.I was new at this and had problems. Trying to get support through the forum was a no go. Those who answered my post were more interested in showing off their know how with tech talk and terms the beginner wouldn't understand. I am retired now, with time on my hands, and back with a new name and password to try again and nothing has changed. I wonder if a sticky thread with a caution to those who reply to requests for help to just "Keep it Simple" when replying might be in order. Or even a beginners tech support area. My copy of 2006 and the others are old now and fewer people are available to respond to requests for help . The few who have responded engage in the same practice which only render the forums as a place for peers to swap ideas but not a place for beginners to get real help. In the long run this hurts repeat sales potential for Auran and as a result, to a small degree hurts all Trainz users.

When I started Trainz with the old 1.3, I was the same.
Then along came Robinhoods, a lover of the early versions. He patiently went through problems until I understood what was going on. I am reasonably proficient now and confident enough tho modify content to get it working in 2012.
I still depend on those many trainzers that are willing to give advice and appreciately them taking the time to help sort things.
Maybe it is the younger generation that have a problem passing on their expertise, not really understanding the need to dumb down instructions.
Cheers,
Mike

I own Trainz 1.3 and 2006, so I am quite sure that I can answer any problem that you have.

If you can describe to me what issues you are having with either version, I am confident that I can give you aid, even in the most basic of explanation for people who have the most minimal computer experience. :)

I covered some of this in the 2006 Help forum, anyway I have problems like tutorials shutting off in the middle of a session,or switches not working or switching back after you cross over them leaving you derailed , turntables not moving or turning to any track but the one your engine is on. Most of the tutorial layouts are so full of bugs that the layout is unusable without shutting off the tutorial , and I don't know how to do that. These are just a few , the list is long enough to make one just quit. I mentioned in 2006 help forum my computer's capacities and someone replied that I need a computer twice as fast . When this program came out a computer like that didn't exist, and at 2.8GHZ with a fast video card , you would think the one I have now would be enough. I started out with Microsoft Train Sim and although it runs perfect, it lacked the fantastic detail and visual complexity that I love about Trainz. If you want to take a crack at it I am all ears,Thanks for replying.

You are right - the tutorials are buggy as blazes, which is a shame but it was ever thus!

Support in the forums is imho generally pretty good, and although I agree there are a few tech-heads their posts are not so much showing off as just over my head. Generally a polite request to re-word the post in English gets either their attention or an alternate reply from someone else.

TC is the one version of Trainz I skipped. My angle on Trainz is building routes and the purpose of the TC series was to run routes. Not my thing.

Anyway my advice to you is to pretty much forget the 'tutes' and just go play with the thing. It's more-or-less intuitive (unless you are into real-world physics and steam) and I'd suggest skipping those at first anyway and just go run a diesel or two in DCC mode till that becomes second nature, then get more complex.

Posting in the 'General' forum will probably get you more views and therefor more replies than either the specific 06 or TC forums....

A lot of great stuff here in downloadable PDF format. They cover a lot in the older versions. The forum seems to have taken a turn with the release of TS09. Some spend way to much time defending the program instead of enjoying it, no matter what version you use.

Dave.......

There are several people right here in this thread, that are willing and able to help turtor you, and answer TRS2006 questions via PM.

TRS2006 still works great, as well as downloading, and FCT's

My answer to your question was:

I believe you would just edit the session to your liking and save as a different name.

Your response was:

If I knew how to do what you just said I probably would not have asked the question , but thanks anyway.

All well and good, but if I don't know what you don't know, how can I help? You were content to tell me that I haven't helped you with your problem and never was specific about what you didn't know how to do. Questions lead to answers, but assuming someone is aloof and just answering to "show off" does not get the job done.

Open 2006.
In Surveyor, find the Tutorial "3 Diesel Cab" for the route "City and Country USA 2". Open that Tutorial in Surveyor.
When the Tutorial opens, Use the "Surveyor" drop down menu on the upper left of your screen to open the "Find Object" tool if the locomotive is not in sight when the tutorial opens.
When the find object mini window opens, choose "ATSF F7A-1", and then click on the green check mark. The screen should change to a view of the engine.

Now, for the "defanging" of the Tutorial. For your purposes we want to "gut" the tutorial, and turn it into a session that gives you total control, if I am understanding you correctly. This is essentially the same as opening a route, and choosing an engine and consist and plonking it down on the tracks somewhere as Andy has suggested, but for the purposes of your enlightenment, we shall carry on.

Mouse up to the top and choose the "Edit Session Rules" button. Click on it and the Edit Session window opens. Delete every rule underneath the second one present in the window, that is, each rule beneath the "Control Type" rule must be deleted. This guts the tutorial.
After that, click on the "Control Type" rule and choose to edit it in the window. Now you can change it to either DCC control or cab control, whichever you prefer.
You should probably add some rules as well, in order to make a better session for yourself.
Click add in the window, and scroll down to "Driver Setup", and then the green check mark. This allows you to add a driver to the engine.
If you have a driver, you should also have commands for him, back to the window and add rules and scroll down to "Driver Command" and the green check mark.
Now that you have those essential rules in place, you certainly can choose to add others if you wish.
You may want to edit those rules you added, so click on the "Driver Setup" rule in the window, and then choose "Edit". Make whatever changes you wish and then green check mark.
You may do the same for the "Driver Command" rule, a list will open for you to choose which commands are available for the driver in...well, Driver.

Now go to the top of the "Rules" window and change the name of the session to something you will recognize. Then you can also change the description if you like. Once done, choose the green check mark at the bottom of the window. The window will close.

Mouse to the top of the screen and under the Surveyor Drop down menu, choose "Save as". A small window will open asking if you want to save a new route and session or save new session. Choose the second one, and the the green check mark again.

Now you can close the main screen at the top, (the red button).

Now when you open either Surveyor or Driver, you should see your defanged session listed beneath the route "City and Country USA 2".

I trust this exercise has been useful for you.

no road traffic on trainz12 any ideas?

Now here's a perfect example of a question that leads to the frustration expressed in the OP, because the question really doesn't give enough info about the issue:

No car traffic on ALL routes?

No car traffic on SOME routes? Which routes?

No car traffic on routes you have created yourself?

A couple of things to check are:

If the issue is on all routes: Is traffic toggled 'Off' in Surveyor? Mouseover the buttons on the Objects tab > Splines and check the traffic button.

If the issue is in routes you have created yourself the default region has no traffic by design. Fix that by Surveyor > Main Menu > Edit Route > Region text box.

Other specific traffic issues may have other specific fixes....

That is like rebuilding the layout.

Thank you for that patient answer. I went into Surveyor and discovered we have different versions of 2006. There was no find object tool in the drop down menu, there also was no engine any where in the layout. I have never tried surveyor but explored some of the tools and windows only to have the program crash. I had to cut the power to my computer to get out of the frozen image. I think 2006 is a lot like Windows Vista . Way more bugs than I want to bother with.

TRS2006 has no bugz whatsoever ... as far as I know, it has been working spectacularly, and is a very stable platform, as well as the CMP functions.

TS12 has some few known bugz.

TRS2006 has no bugz whatsoever ...

Then we got VERY different versions. 04 was stable after one service pack near completely broke it LOL, TS10 is a very stable Trainz platform - the most stable since the final 04 build - but imho TRS06 was near the bottom of the pile...

Back to toey: I don't even have 06 installed any more, but 'Find Object' is common to all versions and was always in the Main Menu (Surveyor Menu in 04, might still be that in 06), 'bout half way down. It isn't a 'tool' but a text option on the menu list which opens a dialogue box.

It is quite possible there was no rolling stock (engines) if you opened the Route in Surveyor, in fact there shouldn't be any! You need to edit the session to find the rolling stock. Where that option was in 06 eludes my ageing memory, but you are looking for 'Session' or 'Driver'...
