Summer's Here!

Nicely recovered fellas!

I used to enjoy keeping my 1984 CJ7 on the road. I had it for 6 years and never needed a mechanic or body man! Just bought one of those cheep Jeep manuals from an auto parts place and followed the instructions. Every summer I painted her a new colour with a brush and roller! One summer when I was drilling holes for rivets my hair got caught in the motor of the drill. Very embarrassing! I had to walk in the house with the drill securely fastened to the side of my head. I hacked off some hair and took the "dead" drill back to the shop. I told them, "This thing just stopped working."...they gave me a new one. Although I liked long hair, putting it in a pony tail seemed a little too girly to me. Girly or not, it was in a pony tail whenever I worked on the Jeep after that.

Have a safe and great summer.......Rick

Hi Rick,

That Jeep sounds like a fun car. Did you ever go off-roading with it?

This is the '65 Beetle I plan to buy:

It will be great to use to learn auto-mechanics and gain new skills as I fix it up.

Kieran.

Are you going to paint it like Herbie looks Kieran?
Hell no!

This is a '65, not a '63.

The '65 has a bigger rear window. It was enlarged in the 1964 model. Therefore one cannot use a '65 to make an accurate Herbie. This one also is not a ragtop.

Well Kman, if I had one of those classics siting in my driveway, I'd have it painted over with big multicolored flowers, rainbows, and the like. I'm sure it would be a big hit with the Aussie lasses, not to mention the local constabulary!

I have already had four of my female peers from school express interest in going for a ride in the car. :D

I'm just going to do it up in original condition - no flowers or peace symbols (unlike my Trainz version). ;)

Morning All; Yes, Kieran, I did take her off road now and then. Not like most fellas around here...they are not happy unless every square inch is covered with mud and something breaks! I just like to drive on old logging roads and such. I only got "stuck" once, on a lake. It was very slippery and I had to get out my rope (no winch), find an area where I could get a grip with my feet and pull it to an area of the ice covered with snow. That rig could do just about anything, but that day we were defeated by a perfectly flat area!

Oh those old VWs! Yes, the heaters were a joke! I think they had some kind of "plate" or something covering the underside of the vehicle. If we had a fair amount of snow, you might as well walk! At some point we stopped getting them around here. They are available again, but you don't seem them in great numbers like in the old days. Back in the early 70s a buddy bought a brand new VW for $2,300. I think they are around $30,000 now.

We live on a salt marsh. These days in the summer (and anytime there is no ice), me and the wife hop in our kayaks and spend a couple of hours looking for wild life or paddle down to the bay and lay on the sand and listen to the waves and the sound the rocks make as the waves move them.

I own a 2007 "truck" called a Toyota Tacoma X-Runner. Honestly, I've opened the hood about 5 times. What the heck is all that fancy stuff in there!? I still take it to the dealer and let them do all the work. I did manage to put in a new headlight bulb. No tools required!

Cheers....Rick

Try about $16,000 to $20,000 for a fully restored Bug, well here in Australia at least.

The one I posted before is advertised at $3,500 but the seller has offered us a price of $2,500 which I definitely need to take advantage of! The car is in good mechanical order, it just has some rust in the engine area that prevents it from being roadworthy. Then the only fixes to do are cosmetic. The roof lining needs to be done and the bumpers and other chrome parts need to be sand-blasted and re-chromed.

The original Beetle ceased production in 2003.

Fortunately Down Under there's no snow (well, not here in Queensland at least) to rust the underside of the car and the climate means that heater usage can be kept to a minimum.

I am looking forward to owning a piece of history! :D

Hi Kieran; That $30,000 is what I think a new one cost these days. We also have those who love the old timers, and would have no problem paying that same price for a restored one. I'm not sure when we stopped receiving the original or when the "new Bug" showed up. I never owned one, but I think they were pretty dependable. Also, I've heard stories about them being built in Mexico even when we could no longer buy them up here.

Cheers...have fun...watch your fingers and perhaps your hair!...Rick

Oh, do you mean that price for the 'New Beetle'? If so, it sounds about right.

Mexico is where the originals were last built. The last one rolled off the production line in 2003 and by now all the vehicles from that factory have been bought. There's no new versions of the original Beetle to buy.

The 'New Beetle' is still a current model.

I live on this salt marsh/lake. I never know what to call it, it's a little different everyday. That stump the pair is sitting on was not there the day before...must have come in from the ocean. A pretty good hurricane blew through here about a dozen years ago....It's starting to come back. I took this fuzzy photo yesterday, about noon hour
