Hey,Illinoiscentral,

I have a little problem, I have been doing some research on steam locomotives but I need to know, since you are doing steam engine restorations like the 401, do you think it would be wise to start with a small steam loco or a medium sized one like a 2-10-0 and how long will it take & thanks!:o

First off, your an Idiot to the extreme. Where On god's green earth are you going to get the money to fund this expedition of yours? This stuff isn't cheap! Your $10.50 per week paper route won't fund even a Saddle tank 0-6-0 restoration in a thousand years. That's even if, you have a job.
Secondly, You won't be able to restore a locomotive, by yourself. Guaranteed if someone showed you the serious guts of a steam locomotive, you'd sit there confused and stupid, not knowing what to do. You need a group, who has talents in every facet of metal working to do ANYTHING related to a steam locomotive.
My best recommendation for you?
Keep dreaming.
