Stay with Trainz my friends,

"Stop the bashing of train simulator games." Request denied. Anything else? :wave:

Seriously, I don't see it as "bashing", it's more like fair warning. Main cause of flamewars over at the trainsim.com forums was people griping about legit problems with the game, other people flaming those people as "whingers" (whiners), and nobody saying anything positive - because there WEREN'T many positives to begin with. The perception was that the tone was "too negative", okay, so all youse footy fans (hysterical cheerleading zealots) make some POSITIVE posts to counterbalance the negative posts! They had nothing to say after that except to continue attacking all the negative threads. So what IS good about railworks?

http://forums.trainsim.com/vbts/showthread.php?285908-Attitude-Check!

I started that thread to answer the question, what exactly does railworks do BETTER than the others, aside from appearance? Answer didn't turn out the way I expected, Trainz does a boatload of things much better. :eek: So here I am. :cool: That's the point tho, you get used to one trainsim, why change to another unless it's an improvement over what you have now? Granted, Trainz has flaws and limitations - but it has LESS flaws and limitations at present than any of the competitors.

In my experience, it is less demanding on the hardware.

Would have to second that, at least on the laptop.

Of course from the pure driving perspective it is still hard to beat Zusi 2. I spent the last two evenings before bedtime reinstalling plus (manually) putting in over 100 core and content updates. The programme now includes a very well put together version of the Rhine Left Bank from Koln down to Koblenz and beyond. Despite the graphics being very basic I was immediately caught up in the atmosphere - realistic signalling and implementation of the German safety systems, a full timetable that runs for five hours plus, non-player trains all over the place with the AI despatcher quietly and efficiently sorting them out while dynamically arranging the best route for your train. That's before you even get moving with supremely accurate physics (open the Class 103 throttle too quickly and you trip the overload CB) i.e. proper notched throttle, no % nonsense, a restrained dip and sway from the cab and - superelevation!

None of the "big three" deliver all of that and I really had to drag myself away at "lights out".

Of course the downside to Zusi is it's very hard to create routes, I tried and failed miserably which of course is what sells copies of TRS and RW - the relative accessibility of the sandbox.

In my experience, it is less demanding on the hardware.

I disagree, on this machine RW stutters and pauses continuously.

TS2010 SP3 runs smoothly, even on large routes like ECML & UMR2010.

It`s not a fair comparison anyway, as Trainz has a higher degree of detail in regards, scenery and texturing.

IKB.

The key problem with all these "other" simulators is that EVEN IF they have the best graphics in the world they haven't a chance in hell of matching Trainzes database of nearly 150,000 assets.So if you commit yourself to building a route in one of them your route is hampered by lack of content and if the simulator goes bust you are left out in the cold.
Now if somebody invented a simulator which could use content from ANY simulator....that would be impressive.

IsambardKingdomBrunel,

I was joking :P

No Simulator can beat trainz.

The ONLY thing is RailFail has PAYWARE content, No Freeware...

I told you ten billion times I don't exaggerate!

You can't really say there's NO freeware content, but there's a very limited amount, main problem there is trying to draw developers away from what they're developing for NOW - to do that the new game has to be actually an improvement over the old.

CajunRon gave it a shot, converted his 4-4-2 Atlantic steamer to work in railsim, but nobody will ever see any of his other MSTS models converted to RS/RW because the game won't do what he wants. AFAIK that 4-4-2 Atlantic is still the ONLY freeware US steam loco for RS/RW, users want more the developers have to reprogram the game to attract the developers who make US steam locos, it's that simple.

Funny thing;

"nineercharlie" is PhilSkene, both he and I were looking at RS/RW to be the next great thing. Topic of RW AI is taboo but even without me or Phil talking about it, it just won't die;

Despite the straight dope from one of the developers;

Saying it is what it is, we don't intend to fix it because we don't consider it to be broken.

I think pfx touched on what I said earlier about the ease of the game compared to say MTS. I spent a long, long time building my city's former vast tramway. A city, suburbs and urban areas. This I could never have done in MTS and wouldn't have attempted it. Now I am building the whole of what is left of the rail scene in N. Ireland and again due to the relative ease. It takes me a lot of time off and on. You do have to leave it off sometimes for a break or you end up not finishing a route, etc! Apart from one earlier project from across the Irish Sea this one of mine is the only other contribution to show the rail scene over in Ulster and hopefully all the way down to Dublin in time.

In every activity there will always be positive and negative attitudes. However Trainz is not a bank breaking cost at all aprt perhaps to some person still at school say. I have been happy with 04 then 06 and have been trying out 09 on my laptop as I will eventually transfer my N.I.R. system to TRS09 in my pc. We are all human and because we are not perfect we can drift into a negative direction but not I. For me Trainz was a brilliant and accidental find after trying MTS. For the reasonable price I paid for each Trainz I have had vast hours of sheer enjoyment. This has been increased by my boyhood love of my city's former tramway system which I have totally recreated. Then again with many great holidays across in N. Ireland and knowing a bit of it's rail history given me another new direction. Even when that is finished it may not be (!). I would then consider another version by adding a closed line or two as if they had been brought back! So overall I tend to look with positive eyes on Trainz. Leaving aside the honest problems that can arise some expect too much for what they pay.

Finally, I remember preaching at a service and quoting from the late Rev Dr Barclay who told some youngsters of an antarctic explorer who told people he had 2 types of dogs - pullers and sooners. When someone said they had never heard of such breeds he smiled and said that some would pull all day without a quibble and others would simply do nothing (!).

Trainz is money worth spent.

I must say its good to see hard-core RW flamers ending up here. Long may you stay with Trainz.

That payware thread is an example of UKTS at it's worst... locked for absolutely no logical reason certainly no breach of the CoC. I started a fresh thread asking if there were now new posting guidelines about what can be said about RW, including whether it is no longer permitted to discuss AI failings in the lead up to major DLC releases (WCML north today). Despite initial denials some of the later posts on that thread, including from an "off duty" RS artist seem to indicate far from being tongue in cheek, my assessment of the situation may have been closer to the mark than I thought.

In the meantime one of the moderators (not the one who locked the thread) has chucked his teddy and packed it in with an "I'm leaving..." thread, cue lots of barbed comments I'm sure some aimed in my direction at having the temerity to question the moderation policy. Well, if you or your colleagues make bad decisions that's what happens!

Contrast that with the situation here where people can and do post about problems with Trainz but Auran are quite happy to let them run and, AFAIK, no harm has ever been done to sales.

Oh no... I feel one of those "Do You wish To Uninstall Railworks" moments coming on...

Hi Vern and Everybody.
I have very much enjoyed Verns postings on the state of Railworks and UKTS as I have not visited the site since my very short excursion with Rail Simulator. I was thinking of buying Railworks as I seen somewhere that the Bristol to Exeter route was to be launched as a payware item but that seems to have disappeared off the agenda as far as I can tell.

As far as the Auran Trainz forum is concerned I am sure we all very much appreciate how little interference there is from the moderators with regard to what is posted. Thinking of some of my old posts I am sure there have been times when have been out of line with regard to what I have said about Auran although I do not think I ever said anything personally derogatory about anyone in any posting.

So I for one say thanks Vern for all your information and advice regarding Railworks and UKTS, and thanks Auran for allowing us to use this forum so freely and for the many many hours of entertainment you have given me and many thousands of others through the Trainz simulator.

Bill
NB;- (Does anybody know if the route between Bristol Temple Meads and Exeter is available for Trainz or is it being done as payware or freeware by anyone). If not I might have a go myself now I've nearly finished my North Devon route.

I think I know what you mean, but I don't think Auran will let threads be that question moderation policy or actions.

As far as stick with Trainz goes, at the moment I fear I'll be sticking with Civ 5 for a while. ;)
