Speed Limits.

Hi

Welcome to the forums. There is a driver command called "Set Max Speed To" by Nikkia which is built-in to 2012 and allows you to set individual maximum speeds for a consist. Speeds are altered in 5mph increments and I have found it very useful for programming trains to run to a timetable.

That's useful to know.

I've a similar question, and this seems to be the perfect thread to hi-jack.
How do I set a speed limit other than the default 40mph (in Trainz2010)? I know it's possible because I've seen routes that have different limits on different tracks. I'm hoping I can set it after the track is already laid, without having to do it one segment at a time.

handlaidtrack - In Surveyor look under Track Objects for assets called speedboards, speed signs, etc. Place them on the track where you wish the speed to change. All of the speed signs I'm aware of are single sided. By that I mean that they will only change the speed of a consist which approaches them facing the printed speed. Trains going in the oposite direction will not be affected by the limit sign. If the speed is decreased by the sign (50 to 30 for example), the new limit will take effect as soon as the locomotive reaches the sign. If the speed is increased, the new limit takes effect when the end of the consist passes the sign.

If you want a train to start a session with a speed limit other than the default, simply switch to the session-layer and place an invisible speedboard on the track directly in front of the train.

Hi Brian,
Thanks for your response. I have the 'Set Max Speed' rule, but I don't know how to implement it. There is another rule 'Max Permitted Speed' which I have, but I can't implement the instuctions in the rule edit. I can access the locomotives config file via the DLS, but it wont let me edit it. Helpdesk are saying that it is a third party add-on, and can't help me.
Cheers,
Dick.

Ok let me see if I can get this right as Im still learning to do this myself. In surveyor go to edit session rules. Select Driver command, click on edit. Scroll down the list till you find the "set Max speed" rule. Make sure it is ticked and click on the tick at the bottom of the properties window. While still in session rules editor select Driver setup click edit and find the driver you want. RH click and select the "set max speed" rule speed that you want. click tick on edit window and again out of session rules. It should now be ready to use. (I hope).

Hi Dick

AntonyVW is correct about how to make the rule available for use in a session. When you add it to a drivers commands it will bring up a list of speeds in 5mph increments so you can select the one that you want. It is an extremely useful rule which I make extensive use of on the ECML and it allows you to get round the problem of AI trains always running at the maximum line speed.

Incidently it is relatively easy to edit the code for the rule if you require a finer increment such as 2mph.
