Sound Triggered Events

Hey people.
My first time posting here since I brought TRS2004 in 2005 xD

Anyway, I have a query which I am unable to find a solution to.

I don't know if this is possible but I would like a positional sound played with a trigger rule. I will explain what I mean by this...

I'm trying to have a sound of a guards whistle to play prior to departing or say 5-10secs prior to the AI or myself departing the station etc but I would like to be able to move the sound point.

Can this be done?

Edit: I'm using TRS2006

Many thanks in advance.

Hi m_n,

There is guard's whistle command available for TRS2006 but the problem is it is global. In other words you can hear it from the other end of your route.

To get it to sound 5 seconds before the train leaves the station your commands require a "wait for 5 second" command after the sound. For instance if I used the guards whistle (which I don't) my commands would be:-'drive to - stationxxx'
'load'
'guards whistle'
'wait for-5 seconds'
'hornz'
'drive to or via next point'.

It is a pity there is not a wait for 1 second command because 5 seconds is quite a long time after the train is finished loading and the guards whistle will not sound until loading is finished and the doors have closed.

Hi Bill & m-n,
(Please forgive the abbreviation).

How about a new sound file, that is say 5 seconds long, the first four seconds nothing, then the whistle; for one second??
:o:)

Hi Noel,

Yes that would probably be better. Are volanteering to make one? For me the bigest problem is the fact that it is too global. I don't mind distant train horns so much because if you are around a railway yard you can often hear horns from locos you can't see.

Cheers,
Bill

Hi Bill,

No I wasn't volunteering & I run TRS2004, but I think it could be done, by someone who has some knowledge of scripting & recording sounds for Trainz correctly. We can 'sink' invisible sounds into a location, & that (in TRS2004) is only heard in that vicinity. :)

Well that's a new one for me, I didn't know you could do that, might try it with some of the factory sounds I have if they are height adjustable.

Cheers,
Bill

Hi Bill,

Many of the older sounds available for TRS2004 are installed invisibly just below ground level. To find them it's sometimes necessary to turn off the texture grid ("F9" key in Surveyor) when very near the sound, then you can see a small square to delete. Also several animations like mist ("myst" I think?") are placed the same way.

:)

Hi Noel,

Yes I did know some were below ground and have had to go to wire frame view to find them and delete them but I still did not try changing the height. Now I find some of the are height adjustable and if not with the height tool it is possible to change the height in the config file of some.

Cheers,
Bill

Hi Bill,

When I initially said 'bury them' I only meant the default placing of them.
Are you thinking of pushing some louder sounds deeper to try & get a quieter effect?.
Another way could be to process the kuid's sound file, making it quieter.

I have downloaded a far-off steamer sound from I think the DLS, which is nice. Can't recall what it's named 'though.

Bill69 & nbrettoner, thanks for replying.

I've been looking for a possible way of accomplishing this idea but I always seem to arrive at the same solution which in turn presents a couple of new problems.

Create or designate a positional item. Then through the use of scripting allow this item to play a designated sound by a trigger.

What we need is a non-global version of the "Play-a-Sound" command, that only works if the train that triggers the sound is on the screen. Any scripters up for the challenge?
Mick Berg.
