Some rolling stock (USA) appears to have no couplers, some others look bad...

Is there a way to change or add couplers to the rolling stock I have? Seems like a lot of the DLS ones and a few default ones have a gray box where a knuckle coupler should be? Some of the others that I figure are older versions, I want to change to a better coupler. Does the rolling stock configurations go down to couplers, since you can change bogies, I thought maybe couplers can be fixed, too.

I think you'll have to edit the mesh in order to do that, and that's impossible to do. Over the past few years, I've replaced most of the older US rolling stock I use with better looking and better made ones. Check out those made by Majekear and the repaints by rgcx, as well as those by Jointed Rail from their website. Some of these better made freight cars also have animated couplers and hoses as well.

Depending on the mapping of the rolling stock, you can add an alpha channel and mask the coupler completely so the car has no coupler. Then, using PEV's attachment maker, you can add a.bog2 and a.bog3 as additional bogies attachment points. Cloaked Ghost has some nice couplers that are built in that you can use, and RRMods has some really nice ones as part of their stuff that I have used before too.

That's a very big possibility. Check out those with the 2.5 and 2.9 or higher build number.

Dave Snow and Euphod also made some awesome rolling stock you can use.
