Hi. I'm new to trainz. I started getting this wierd train obsession when I was about 13. So, I'm going to be purchasing trainz 2004 & 2006 on ebay.

Note: These are links to the ebay auctions for trainz 2004, and 2006. I apologize if this forum does not alow links.

Trainz 2004

Trainz 2006
(Does anyone know if these games off ebay come with the serial numbers for the Auran site? They're new, never opened.)

I was browsing on the download station and I searched "R46". Rolling stock only came up for the 2004 version of trainz, not 2006. I always see youtube videos of R46's on 2006. Can you use 2004 trains on 2006? Or is it through the "content manager" (whatever that is)?

Also, can someone tell me good reliable sources where I can download rolling stock? Preferably NYCTA. (:D) I know about Auran's DLS but I need some more. (:D)

This is exactly what I'm looking for:

notice the train is a NYCTA train. Theres a cabin and everything. And it's on 2006. Thats exactly what I'm looking for. That train with that cabin.

Another thing, does every train (or almost) have a cabin? Or at least most of user "magicland's" trains?
Thanks.

Another thing, (sorry lol) can you create your own routes in 2004? Do you have a large area to work with and a wide variety of tools/materials?

Thank you so much in advance.

Generally speaking, yes the games will have their serial numbers inside the cases.
You are able to build routes in both versions.
Both have more or less the same rolling stock included.
You can download rolling stock for free from the Download station.Virtually any train you could possibly want is there.

What I would say is that since TRS2004 is fairly old now, you would be better off spending your money on the new version TRS2009. It has all of the functionality of TRS2004 and TRS2006 but you can run it on a lower spec PC than previous versions and it has better graphics.Generally speaking to run most versions of Trainz the least you need is 1Gb of RAM and a 256 Mb Graphics card.If your PC doesn't have these you will need to upgrade.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for your reply. I downloaded the demo and passed the test. I just have to update my 46 month old drivers.

But, on the DLS all the trains are for 2004.. I try searching for 2006 by ticking the box.. all of magicland and jeff's nycta trains are 2004 only. So can I download them then use them in 2006 and also use them in the 2006 cmp? Because I'll be buying the 2006 special addition that includes the cmp. Thanks. :D

And do most of the rolling stock have cabins? (where you operate the train)

Most previous item work in TRS06 as they are backward compatible so here you have no problem apart from some minor possible fixes
Just be sure when you download locos you have also downloaded all the necessary dependencies

First,

Welcome!

Does anyone know if these games off ebay come with the serial numbers for the Auran site? They're new, never opened.)
They should do - however, as always be careful - the serial number is unique and can only be registered once (ever -it is not transferrable)
I've read that there are come non-valid serial numbers around, it's not too difficult to produce a good-looking copy (you'll understand that I'm a cynical old B:D )

Trainz 2004 is the start if the "modern" sequence - there are older versions, but the rolling tock is looking a bit old nowadays. Everything I've imported from 2004 creation has worked in 2006 & TC3, and a lot works without changes in 2009 (Beta 2). Generally, you can load older versions of assets into newer programs (but not the other way around).
DLS is good - I'm not a US railway fan - so Ill only mention TrainzProRoutes.

Another thing, does every train (or almost) have a cabin? Or at least most of user "magicland's" trains?
The creator has to add the cab details to the model (modelling the loco in GMAX or similar program). There are "generic" cabs, so the creator dosen't have to model everything - depends on the creator.

Another thing, (sorry lol) can you create your own routes in 2004? Do you have a large area to work with and a wide variety of tools/materials?
Oh yes. Trainz ProRoutes have created Marian Pass - it's about 80 miles long.
You start (think real models!) with 1 baseboard (about 740 metres square). You can extend (add another) in any direction you wish, and add topology & trees, buildings etc until you reach your computers limits.
The DLS has a LOT of ready made models - if you're going to create your one, you will need a program like GMAX - lots of patience and to read the tutorials.

Lastly, My impression is that TRS 2009 will be smoother in display than 2006 - which is smoother than 2004 on my PC.
I'd really suggest to look closely at buying 2009 - it's available for download now (World Builder) - or later with additoinal assets (but without the Surveyor) - or buy nboth!

All the best,

Colin

Here are three NYCTA cars shown in TRS2009. The one on the left was created in 2003 and surprisingly has excellent detail inside and out.It has a very simple cab but the controls do not work so you can only drive it in DCC (AI) mode.
The two on the right were created last month, and seem to have slightly less detail but they have working driver controls, again in a very simple cab.

Wow, those trains in that youtube video look nice, but what's with that huge hill they've got to go up, and no 3rd rail track?

The cab they use is not correct for that type of subway (waiting for someone to tell me the secret of digital speedometers), but it is driveable.

All of my content that was created for TRS2004 should work in TRS2006 (IMHO, there's no reason to get TRS2004, and you probably shouldn't waste your money on TRS2006 now that TS2009 is out). I still haven't tested everything in TS2009 (just finishing importing), but what I have tested so far has worked without a hitch.

Why spend $10 plus shipping for an old version, when you can get the latest one for under $30, and download for free? Most older content will work fine with TS2009, and if not, it's usually easily fixable.

AFAIK, ALL NYCTA rolling stock is only available via Auran's Download Station (or Content Manager, which is just another "doorway" to the download station).

Wow. Thanks for all these reply's, guys.

@colprice2002: Thanks for that great reply and answering all my questions! Appreciate it!

@lewisner: Thanks for taking the time to compare the 3. I see now that the detail doesn't change completely. I'm probably going to buy 2009.

@Fuzzies: Thanks man! But I'm afraid I'm too late. Shipped out for another one I saw.

@Magicland: Thanks for the reply! Thats why I put that video up. That train caught my eye. Is that your (or jeffmorris's (sp?)) R46? Would you know?

Overall, I'm probably going to get 2009 on monday. I'll wait till my 2004 and 2006 ship. :)

Once again, thanks to everyone.
All my questions are now answered. (until I get more.) :)

The train hes using is the R62. The one you made I think. Does it come with that cab? If not, where can I get that cabin?

Edit: magicland, search Kuid: [FONT=Verdana, Arial]58843:321 on DLS. Thats your r62. It's the one in the video. Does that come with the cabin hes using in the video?
