Some changes to route only visible when opening a session?

Hello everybody,

Yesterday, I was making some changes to my route ( made with Trainz 2010 ) - some trees, houses and depot were placed, roads( spline ) added and I put a tram on the track to verify if the tracks were laying correctly.

I always use the edit route option and when I finish a particular job I use the save as option to save the route with a different name ( ex 241211a ). Yesterday I went up to 241211d. Every time, when I opened a route with edit route, alle elements were available.

Today I opened the 241211d version by clicking on the edit route option and  the tram and the roads were not present. The trees, houses and depot and all other elements were visible.

I clicked on the session button and when I opened the only available session, the tram and roads became visible.

Does anyone have a reason why this situation occured and is there a solution so that I can use the edit route option again and have all elements available?

Extra info : just noticed - I opened content manager - my content and I saw that all my route changements had a double file name - one with big size 300mb and one with small size 150kb ( for ex 151211a with size 300mB and 151211a with size 150kB ). The route changements done on Dec 24th ( 241211a-d ) only have one big size file ( 300Mb ).

Thank you

Christmas greetings

This looks like yet another "Edit Route" vs "Edit Session" argument. I'll start by stating my position - I always select "Edit Session" when editing any layout.

Your description that some assets only appear in the session is because those assets were added to a session layer, and there is nothing wrong with doing that but those assets will only appear in that saved session.

There are numerous threads dealing with this issue (not always to everyone's satisfaction). Here is one http://forums.auran.com/trainz/showthread.php?t=82786

If you are going to always "edit the route" then my advice is to open your Layers tool and merge your session-layer into your route-layer each time before you save. This, of course, will prevent you from creating a layout that has multiple sessions.

Hello Peter,

Thank you for your reply and your working method.

The only problem is - I haven't got any idea, why the tram and road spline got into a session layer and not in the route layer.

I didn't start a session layer. When most of the route has been finished within the route layer, I will start with some sessions, but I still have to do a lot of other work before starting the several sessions

Meanwhile I merged the session layer into route layer and saved my route
as 251211a. I opened the route and everything was visible. Did some other changes and saved my route. Presently I have arrived at 251211d and all is still in the route layer.

I have no explanation for why it started in the first place, but this is not the first time something weird happens with my version of Trainz 2010.

As long as their is a solution for it, I'm happy :) .

Best regards

This is a common complaint and I sometimes find myself in the same position. Firstly, it would be great if Trainz displayed in Surveyor, perhaps in the Menu bar, the name of the layer that you are currently working in. While this will not stop you from ignoring the information and placing things in the wrong layer, it will give you fewer people to blame for the mistake :).

Secondly, when you start Surveyor using "Edit Route" it will automatically start you with the first available "route" layer as the active layer. If you start surveyor using "Edit Session" it will automatically start you with the first available "session" layer as the active layer. This means it is possible to easily switch between route layers and session layers without even realising it - so your assets can be placed into the wrong layer without even selecting a layer first.

Be aware that some things including industry and passenger settings, weather conditions, time of day, rules, driver lists and driver commands, portal settings, etc will always belong to a session, never to a route. This allows you to create different sessions using the same layout. So each time you select "Edit Route" those settings will be lost and reset to their default values.

Sounds like a merge is required.
If in doubt clone then merge to be sure.
I have been pushed in the direction of 'edit session' then merge at end of work.
All content is then on the route BUT driver instructions etc remain in the session. Very important.
If seperate layers are required for trees, industries etc then make them route layers.
Been working at this for hours to find the best method and will take a lot of persuasion to change.

and a Happy New Year to all.

Hello Peter,

I have been busy with the building of my route since a couple of months.
I always have made changes to my route using edit route. Also the placement of trams or trains for route testing. I never had this route layer or session layer issue.

With this experience, now I know that such a thing can happen and I have to agree a visible indication on your screen, when swithing to a different layer occur, would be very handy.

Best regards

Hello Ghost42,

Thank you for your information

I already did a layer merge and it went without a problem.

Best regards and Happy 2012.
