Slow loading in VISTA was due to TS2009 validation .. any ideas of a solution??

Hi guys

I have recently posted a question on this forum trying to find the cause of my problem with slow loading and hanging with TS2009 running in Vista 32.
Load times of over 30 minutes to get to the main Surveyor /driver window and then very quick from there into the routes

After much searching and suggestions I found that the problem was the TRAINZ validation.
By removing the login details (Auran name and password) the problem dissappeared and the program loads in seconds.

As most other users don't seem to be having this problem with TS2009 in VISTA I now need to find a solution and would appreciate any suggestions.

- my internet connection seems to be working fine with web browsing and downloading (bought down WIN 7 over the weekend 2gb very quick)
- I have TS2009 on an XP on the same internet connection and with TRAINZ login details entered and it works perfectly.
- I have given permission for the firewall to pass the TRAINZ program (I have even turned the firewall off to no avail)
- UAC is turned off

Might be a combination.
I only have Vista so I cannot tell otherwise but it could be Vista + Trainz = Bad unless you remove the login details.
Thinking about this, I never tried removing login info with Classics or TRS2006. Both of those loaded slow too, TRS2006 actually loaded slower but both had roughly the same load problem as TS2009. I'll try loading Classics without the details tomorrow, if I get the same, it could well be the Vista + Trainz combination.
My desktop alone eats usage. Right now I can check Task Manager and IE8 isn't using much more than the process that keeps the desktop going, both are using several MB.

I will give your suggestion a go but keep in mind that this problem occurs in both the release version of TS2009 as well as the the beta version.

If I was an average joe-bloggs Train enthusiast, with limited computer knowledge, I would possible turn to flight simming and send TRAINZ flying out the window.

I like TRAINZ and persevered with the problem because I have a reasonable computer knowledge and the tenacity to scour the internet for the solution.
For the majority of users I do not think this would be an option.

I been there...

I had dozens of problems with TRS2006...to good a game to forsake for 'o4.

Then I read about moving the programs to the same directory as Program Files & methodically moved 'o6 to that location & it was like the dogs were called off...everything, TRS, CMP, CCP, going into & out of TRS, seamed like a different program.

Paintshed even works better in the same directory...once run the game, PS automatically found the TRS Folder.

That's why I believe your problem lies within the compatibility of Trainz with Vista...a headache we don't need. TRS2006 was released before Vista, so eventually the game & the OS reached a "state of compatibility."

If you have given Admin privileges to the game in Vista, it gets it's work done without problem, including logging on to Auran.

But the game works as intended, better with the applied service packs.

I applied the same location to my install of TS2009 with simular success, when installing the game.

Granted, a lot of these problems should be History next week...:hehe:

Just a little confused here

....moving the programs to the same directory as Program Files

At the moment my "TS2009" directory is a sub-directory of the "Auran" directory in "Program files".

Are you saying that I should make the "TS2009" directory a sub-sirectory of the "Program files" directory or that I should place in the "TS2009" directory in the "C: root directory"?

As a side I had already tried installing TS2009 as administrator (in the default c:/program files/auran/TS2009 directory) and that hadn't solved the problem.
I had also tried running the program "as administrator".

Have exactly the same problem as you regarding 2009 taking forever to perform the validation.

My difference is I am using Windows 7 RC not Vista but the problem is the same.

Along with this problem is another also - TRS2006 CMP takes 7 - 10 minutes to validate the logon & TC3 CMP takes 3 or 4 minutes also.

I also have the exact same setup on another desktop but running XP Pro with no problems.

Something to try in 2009 to confirm something I discovered.

Removing the logon details in Options certainly allows the program to load almost instantly as it does with you.

a) Put the logon details back into options and reboot the PC to set it up as a first time start again. Where it will take a few minutes for 2009 to start.

b) Start 2009 and when it is at its 'stuck' screen press CTRL - ALT - DELETE then start Task Manager (just to get to the desktop - pressing the Start keyboard keys don't do anything at this stage - in Windows 7 anyway).
Anyway the reason for this is to get to the desktop to start your web browser ie IE7, IE6 whatever. What I am trying to achieve here is to cause the PC to access the internet.

c) When I do this TS2009 seems to have validated itself and when restored is at the menu screen.

Still testing this Michael but I have a funny feeling that when TS2009 starts up in Windows 7 (& Vista) the call to the internet either gets missed or screwed up somehow and sits there waiting for ages until TS2009 does a retry (maybe it doesn't even do a retry) or something else gives the required 'kick-up-the-bum' to the internet processes & allow the validation to be performed.

This is all just my theory of course but it definitely is the validation that is not working - in my case also TS2006 CMP & TC3 CMP.

I also have eliminated all other possibilities, Antivirus, Firewall, Raid, etc as far as I know - I agree with your finding as per other processes happening ie Sytem Idle @ 99% and everything else @ 0% - there is no HDD activity or any other background programs running.

At least it narrowing down somewhat................

EDIT: Just a bit more discovery. Don't think it is the starting of the internet that kicks TS2009 off but minimising and restoring the program that does it????????????

Sorry but that does not appear to be the solution.
I did as you suggested but still have the same problem.

Heres what I did .....

- Uninstalled TS2009
- reinstalled in c:\root directory
- run install and program as administrator
- program still hangs until I remove login details
- then loads in seconds

...is the advice I gave you.

As someone experienced with computers I'm sure you recognise the incongruity of having to remove you username & password just to run the game.

UAC was easy to figure out, Windows XP has User Accounts Control, Vista just made it automatic. A reliable Internet Security package makes UAC redundant.

Running as Admin should have set up your firewall permissions.

I'm running DirectX, but some people run OpenGL.

TS & TRS has to build a TAD to function correctly, did you open Content Manager v2? That is a function folks overlooked for the longest time, that reinstalling can't allow the TAD to rebuild.

To get to this point you have reinstalled TS2009, SP1, rebuilt the database?

Excessive TAD rebuilding is one of the problems with my install, covered by this weeks SP2.

SirGibby, whilst your here, look on the command bar atop right, Tools/Internet Options/Security/Sites, add the URL for this website. It will probably get down to http://www.auran.com, that will help any outbound Trainz.exe file to log on.

Did some checking.
Classics does not suffer this problem in my Vista 32-bit.
TRS2006 and Classics CMP always had the slow CMP, TS2009 CM2 runs faster though occassionaly a few seconds slow acknowledging DLS.
I know TS2009 added new stuff that connects online when Trainz is Launched. TRS2006/TC had only iPortal and iChat, not much else but TS2009 gives the browser type look and access to website-looking pages.
Since it was mentioned this is not a problem with XP, I'd say it has something to do with the added Online features not working right with Vista (and apparently the new Windows). At this point you would need computer techs skilled in both Trainz Online features plus Vista features to sort out why the new Online stuff and Vista don't like each other. And if it doesn't work with the new Windows, this is something that needs looking at Since Auran commited to the Online enhancements.
Future problems between Online features and Windows will not get good community reception.
