Signals problems

Hi
I am new to the surveyor route building and am unable to work out how to get the signals to work at a junction, My trains all seem to form a queue at the crossings and the signals are locked by a A1 train (whatever that means)
any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated
thanks
Roger.

Hi Roger,

Is this happening on single track that has come from passing loops (sidings in the US and Canada)?

You need to put in a Type 06 facing towards the diverge and a type 04 facing the other way towards the single track. To ensure that the tracks take the correct track, use direction markers that face the proper direction (they work like do not enter one-way signs).

No, I have the main-line with the passenger train running between 2 stations, then at various points I have branch lines leading of the main line,(both left and right turnouts) leading to and from industries.
The signals just stay on red for both the mainline and the branch line, there is a "locked icon" above the points switch stating this point is contolled by a A1 train. I'm using trainz 2012, can you tell me the names of the signals I need please and anything else like power boxes etc.
It is starting to do my head in
The route is UK based
thanks

Hey Guys, thank's a million.
I have downloaded all pdf files and saved the sites in my favourites.
I shall print them out as I go along, I think that with all this info I should be up and running fairly soon
Thank you everyone

Hi everyone.
Well, Thanks to you guys I now have all my signals working perfectly, I started to get carried away in the end and was putting in branch lines all over the place :D

The main rule as far as I can see is at a junction put a red squared signal (home signal both sides of the junction then a yellow signal (distant signal, oblong with a v in it further back.

It takes a bit of messing about to get it right, but with a bit of practice it is quite easy (well fairly easy anyway)

Oh and we mustn't forget the signal box and a few signal relay boxes. ( not sure if you really need them but it works and it looks good):)

Now I can get on with putting all my buildings and scenery in.

Thank's again
without you guys I would of never sorted it out
regards
Roger

JCitron: Can we have a little explanation on what 06 and the other signals are? I am sure many other folks around here would like to know...

I'm not sure on all the numbers, (06-05-04 etc)
I am creating a route that is uk based (early 1960's)
The 2 main signals are all that I used, they are.............
Red- SIG UQ HOME TC 20ft LMS
AND
YELLOW- SIG UQ DISTANT 20ft LMS

you can find both the above and the signal relay box in trackside objects in surveyor

the signal box is in the buidings tab

Plus I used a "Signal relay box" placed next to each signal and a Signal Box every so far along the track
as I said, not sure if you need the signal relay box or the signal box, but it works fine anyway.

Hope this helps
regards
Roger

Sure, no problem.

The most commonly used signals, it seems to me, are as follows:

Type 04 Absolute --- used at the end of junctions where they would merge into the mainline and to guard crossovers.

Type 05 Permissive aka Home signals ---- used ahead of 04's and 06's to give warning to the driver on what's coming up. With the Jointed Rail Search Signals, they will display a solid or flashing yellow, with a flashing yellow indicating the next signal is red.

Type 06 Diverge --- These are used to guard junctions, and in particular where the track goes from double to single, they will face the single track.

When setting up a single to double track/passing siding (passing loop for those UK train fans), There is a type 06 facing the single track and one or two type 04 signals facing back on the double track.

In some cases, Type 08's are used. These are used for wye (triangle) junctions. A type 08 is setup with one each facing towards the direction of travel.

Sometimes, in particular with the older versions of Trainz, there are Type 01s, Type 02s, and Type 03s used as well. These are similar to the signals above and serve the same function. The older Type 01 is like the Type 08, and the 02 is like an 04, and the type 03 is like a permissive 06.

Hope this helps explain the signals, but using the 04, 05, 06, and 08 types has made signalling very successful for me.

John
